North Dakota Students Study Least In USA

From: Grand Forks Herald

GRAND FORKS – Turns out that hockey players at North Dakota aren't the only students on campus not hitting the books. The University of North Dakota received some dubious recognition from the Princeton Review this week. UND moved up on the list of schools with students who study the least – actually, it’s #1 – and landed a spot on the list of schools with least-accessible professors.

To be fair, UND is still among the nation’s 373 top universities, which is how it got into Princeton Review’s list of “The Best 373 Colleges” in North America. It was the only one in North Dakota listed, though several state universities did make it into a separate list of top Midwestern colleges.

Princeton Review arrived at its rankings through a survey of 122,000 students at the 373 colleges, asking questions such as how widely liquor is used on campus.

Other than the rankings for specific categories, such as least studious students, the 373 are not ranked together because the company thinks it’d be comparing apples and oranges. Different universities fit different kinds of students, it said.

So, here’s a quick recap: In 2009 UND was No. 5 among those with students who study the least, No. 15 for students who down the most liquor and No. 18 among party schools.

This year, UND is #1 among those with students who study the least and No. 19 among those with professors who are least accessible.

The Princeton Review based those on answers to these questions: “How many out-of-class hours do you spend studying each day?” and “How accessible are your instructors outside the classroom?”

In response to questions about its students’ studiousness, UND released a study by the Higher Education Research Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles, that compared UND students with those at two peer universities, whose names were not revealed.

UND seniors in the 2008-09 year said they studied, on average, 5.48 hours a week. At one peer, seniors said they studied an average of 5.54 hours and, at the other peer, 5.37 hours. UND freshmen said they studied an average of 5.48 hours while their peers studied 5.65 and 5.48.

Wow, this is shocking news...I didn't think they studied at all. I wonder if they will use this as a recruiting tool?

I wonder if all of the hockey players that were arrested took their books with them to jail?

It certainly explains the spelling issues, reading comprehension problems and grammatical errors from college hockey's most rabid fanbase.

Ouch. This hurts.

It's not like there is that much to do in Grand Forks when it's 20 below zero and there is no hockey game to go to...

so the fact that many notable people in the country have graduated from North Dakota, including the current CEO of Cargill, the current CEO of Buffalo Wild Wings, Phil Jackson and Dick Armey, not to mention that it's a good possibility that the person flying your airplane is a UND graduate means nothing to you?

Wow DU, you're really reaching here. The shock of losing to RIT must have finally worn off. Look forward to your 7th place finish this year.

Wow Brandon, I had no idea that the CEO of Buffalo Wild Wings graduated from UND. Now that puts things in a whole different light.

Thanks for the update

Q: Whats the difference between the University of North Dakota and your local community college?

A: North Dakota has a hockey team.

UND is #1 for students who study the least. Also #1 for students who consider fried possum a delicacy.

Brandon.....thanks for the inspirational message, homeboy. I have a tear in my eye. The next time I'm on the crapper pinching a loaf after a night of spicy hot chicken wings I'll think of you.

Now wait a minute - I think NODAk students have studied throwing Lawn Mowers, dishes and plates from apartments, beating up girls and getting arrested. And last season - they must have studied up on "how to get your ass owned by Denver". Yes, congratulations..... your studies paid off on that one! Just for the record North Dakota fans, Howie Mandell actually invented that glove-over-the-head trick you see in the picture, and he did it back in the 80's. There's a video on YouTube of him doing it more more recently, while goofing around backstage at a taping of "Deal Or No Deal".

How'd that work out for DU in the F5 game against UND? :)

I understand the need for dggoddard to post this article though. DU is setup for a very down year (good luck getting home ice!) and needs something to lift the spirits of the DU faithful. It'll be a long year, Pios fans.

Gee, I wish I had the time to sit around my Daddy's snap cover business playing on the computer....spewing out useless information. This all reminds me of a scene out of the movie Tommy-Boy.

Well Brandon, that redneck I saw in the fields banging his dog was also a UND grad but that doesn't make it any better. The fact that they are studying at all is amazing. I thought they were all busy getting DUI's. Also nice comments to several of the other anonymous people.

That guy fucking his dog was Goon and Brandon knows that shit...

Brandon- If you love UND so much,go back to North Dakota, you won't be missed in Denver.

Brandon's just stickin' up for his alma mater, same as we DU fans would do if (when?) DU gets in the news for something really stupid like this.

All I know is, Hackstol better of gotten the damn message here over the summer.... he needs to rally his team to show up for the big games and put up a better effort against Denver this coming season. If DU sweeps like they did again.... people are going to start looking at the coaches saying WTF?? Teach your players to play hockey and not take shitty penalties. This is not fight ring... it's a hockey game. Once North Dakota slips into that idiotic mindset they're doomed....against DU, UMD or anybody else. Hackstol is not the man to be leading that team, period.

where's the 'you can't spell dumb without DU' comeback? That one is so original and clever. Come on guys!

Speaking of original material, I'm waiting for some new material. The DUI, lawn mower throwing, etc... is so last summer. I'm not sure where the beating up girls comment comes from since that is a UMD thing, but whatev. Since DU people are so "smart", I had higher hopes for this. So disappointed. It could also be noted that the President of the Minnesota Twins is also a UND grad.

Sara....have you taken the class "Best Practices for Pissing in Elevators" yet?

Sara. I was thinking about taking a summer workshop with Goon called “Screw the Pooch.” I’ve heard good things but wanted to get your take. Brandon said that its life changing.

I do love how all DU fans fall in line to back up dggoddard. Every post he makes, you sheep have to agree with him. I know it is difficult for the average Denver fan to have a thought of your own, but really you should at least try from time to time.

There isn't even possum in North Dakota. If you aren't going to leave the insults to your Fearless Leader, at least try to be a teeny bit accurate. I guess this is why none of you have an original thought, this is what happens when you do.

Isn't a UND fan actually having a thought an oxymoron?

Anonymous said...

Wait for it Sara.... wait for it. Those players are so undisciplined and off the leash both on and off the ice..... TRUST ME .... one of Hackstol's boys will be in the doghouse in due time by season's end, I guarantee it. And when it happens, you can hear all about it here!

baa!-baa!

Does that excite you Dirty sheep lover?

Unfortunately all the DU dirt is covered up by both the DU school and DG's blog, so we don't get to read about that fun stuff here.
