The University of North Dakota defeated DU 4-3 on Friday night in Ralph Engelstad Arena. DU managed to twice jump out to early one goal leads but eventually the Fighting Sioux onslaught wore down the Pioneers.

Jason Zucker scored twice for DU and Matt Donovan scored a beautiful goal in the second period.

DU had just one shot on goal in the second period but managed to leave the rink at the second intermission with the score level at 2-2.

Another big night for DU Freshmen. Zucker had two goals, Brittain played very well in goal, David Makowski was +3 and Beau Bennett had an assist.

Ugh. 1 puck shot for the Pioneers in 20 minutes??? Don't know if that's a record or not.

I watced the game on T.V. Britain played well. those four goals were mostly on the defense. That end to end rush by Donavan was spectactular. N.D. has a very good team. Tonight should be another good one.

That didn't feel like a 1 goal game to me. Feld like a 3-1 game or something. If we would have played 3 periods instead of 2, could have been very different. Considering that, 4-3 is pretty darn good.

Sorry DU fans, but you're in for a tough season. Simply put, the Pio's are not a very good team. UND is still not playing to potential and they dominated DU in every aspect of the game. It could of easily been 7-2.

Zucker and Brittain looked very good for freshman. Very impressed!

I would say that you're looking at best to a .500 season...just my opinion.

Could *have* been 7-2. Grammar counts in the rest of the country.

The pioneer vision video feed didn't start working for me until near the end of the 2nd. Anybody else have this problem?

Wonder how many Sue fans will be on the DU blog after the Sat game. 3 to 0. Also outscored in the series on their ice 6 to 4. And this is a rebuilding year. Lets hear it for the Sue.

Mike Chambers @ Denver Post:

DU senior center Jesse Martin has just been wheeled off the ice in a stretcher after being hit by North Dakota senior Brad Malone, an Avalanche draft pick.

Malone crushed Martin parallel to the boards, as Martin was trying to skate the puck up ice, out of the defensive zone. He had his head down. No penalty was immediately called, but while emergency crews prepped Martin for the stretcher, officials gave Malone a 5-major for charging and game misconduct.

UPDATE: Martin was unconscious and did not have use of his extremities while on the ice, but regained feeling in his arms and legs while on the stretcher and en route to Altru Heath Systems in Grand Forks and was admitted for precautionary reasons.

I was at the game, and let me tell you, when a stretcher is brought out on the ice.....it just sucks.... No matter who you root for. The Ralph was pretty quiet after that. Thank God preliminary reports are that he's ok.

Thanks for the update. I was there too and he just went down and didn't get up. Definitely put a damper on the crowd.

"I spoke to Jesse Martin’s father, Terry, and the senior center is resting comfortably at Altru Heath Systems here in Grand Forks."

Hard to comprehend what is going on here. Hockey has been the top sport at DU ever since they eliminated the football program. We went through the "dark years" of Johnston, Backstron, etc. until Gwoz arrived and brought a winning tradition. Back-back national championships. Basketball at DU? Please.
