YouTube: UND's Malone's Hit On Jesse Martin

(above) DU's Jesse Martin was injured on this play and was taken to a Grand Forks hospital. Later he was airlifted to Minneapolis' Hennepin County Medical Center

DU's Jesse Martin sustained three neck fractures to his C-2 vertebrae in Saturday night’s hockey game at North Dakota and was airlifted to Minneapolis after discovering swelling in his spinal cord. Mike Chambers of the Denver Post has more details.

Mike Chambers will post updates in his Denver Post Blog and Monday in the Denver Post.

I received a text message from Chambers at 3 PM MST on Sunday stating that he had been in contact with Jesse's family.
"Jesse Martin still has not walked and has some numbness in his core. He may not need surgery, but things can change in cases like this hour to hour. Martin may need to wear a Halo Brace for three to six months."
We encourage the college hockey community to continue to keep Jesse in your thoughts.

Martin got annihilated...damn that looked like it hurt like hell.

Hope Martin is going to be OK. Best wishes to him and his family.

Mike Chambers of the Denver Post spoke to Martin's father and so far, so good.

No word if or when Martin could return.

Great to see DU's players rally after the injury and clearly they played with purpose and poise.

i sure hope he can return asap

The scariest thing was Jesse didn't move at all for quite awhile. When I first saw is feet move I breathed a sigh of relief.

Here's hoping there are no long term effects.

"A clean hit" according to Nikstol. Malone clearly charged, and clearly led with his elbow hitting Martin square in the head. Then Malone had the audacity to jaw with the DU bench before leaving the ice while Martin lay motionless still.

I hope we get UND in the playoffs....

Dirty said...

I don't understand why people say Malone was clearly charging. Where is this in the video? Malone is gliding when he comes into the frame. Perhaps with a wider angle you could see that Malone was charging, but from the video there is no proof.

I really have no problem with a penalty being called, it was rather annoying that a penalty wasn't called until Martin didn't get up though. Whether or not Martin was injured on the play should have no effect on whether or not it was a penalty.

Good to hear that it sounds like Martin will be OK.

dggoddard said...

If the refs don't call a penalty on a major injury and they end up being wrong they run the risk of being suspended by the WCHA.

Zero tolerance for head injuries. Everyone got the memo.

then maybe they should... i don't know... be watching the play in the first place! i mean, how long did it take them to blow their whistle while he was laying there? that was pathetic...

Terrible news about the neck fracture. Sounds similar to Robbie Bina's injury.

wishing Jesse Martin the best. Never want to see a player go down like that.

And I really hope we don't face DU again...

Anonymous said...

If DU and UND face off again and Martin's injury is as bad as it looks right now...that's going to be one violent affair. I was at the games at Magness last year and the atmosphere there was like a powder keg. This year, it'll be worse if they play again.

Twister said...

Horrible news. Hopefully Jesse gets the best possible care and pulls through this. I woke up this morning happy that DU came home with a W. After hearing this I'm left with a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach.

Anonymous said...

Martin got rocked looking the other direction. Didn't look like a charge as the UND player was gliding and didn't leave his feet. UND player kept his elbow and shoulder down but Martin was real low. It was a head hit, but not deliberate nor did the player get his shoulder/elbow high.

These are the types of hit the NHL is struggling with right now... the blind side/open-ice hit.

Hopefully Martin has a speedy recovery.

DU fans are tired of UND fans' take on penalty/no penalty. The same things have been said enough times that we get it.

We don't really care right now.

We're praying for you JMart......

Malone should be suspended forever. UND players are really hacks.

Anonymous said...

I have watched this video over and over. The elbows were clearly up with intent to injure. That should have been the call. The ND player should be suspended. Anyone who cannot see the intent is a homer. These are kids out there playing a game.

Oh man am I fired up. I couldn't care less about CC, they aren't are big rival anymore.

Just because Martin had his head down doesn't give you the right to lead with your elbow at full speed.

Nikstol is a piece of shit who always whines that his goon squad is constantly being call for non-penalties. I hope he feels a least a little guilt for focusing on the penalty now that Jesse's career is likely over.

Suspend Malone for several games and the NCAA should suspend the coach too, enough is enough.

Whoops, "our" of course. Too fired up to write!

C'mon calling for Malone to be suspended for longer than an extra game... if that is stupid. And calling for Hakstols head is dumb.

Hoping for a speedy, successful recovery for Jesse.

I generally post bull stuff here like the Tommy Cross prison comments. I can’t bring myself to do that now – good luck to Martin. CC got raped this weekend but this bothers me more.

Any news is appreciated.

It wasn't charging, at least from the video. But clearly he led with an elbow...and made direct contact on Martin's head. Interesting test of the new "head contact" rules, but Malone should be out for several games. As someone else said "everyone got the memo".

It was sad to hear so many of the fans laughing inside the Ralph when this happened. No respect for the game or the players. UND and it's entire program, from the AD to the fans are a disgrace to the entire sport and the NCAA.

However, the WCHA sees all of them as a prized possession. I bet you're proud McLeod

Anonymous said...

To Anonymous who said "It was sad to hear so many of the fans laughing inside the Ralph when this happened." - I was at the Ralph in section 302 and nobody by me was laughing. I saw a lot of somber faces around me. Many sentiments of "The game doesn't matter anymore, I hope he's ok." were the norm around me. In fact, the entire arena stood and clapped as he was being taken off the ice and before you take that out of context, the clapping was not for Brad Malone. The clapping was all for Jesse Martin. I didn't even hear one word defending the hit.

Best wishes for a full recovery, Jesse!

SiouxFanatic said...

To Anonymous @ Nov. 1, 12:12Am. All I can say is what bloody game were you at? Quit trying to stir shit up, asshole.

I was in section 314 for the game and the arena went very and I mean VERY quiet when Martin went down and didn't get back up. Don't you dare say the UND fans were laughing over the player getting injured.

And I apologize to others for being profane but to see some tool make up some bullshit comment like that over something serious as this boils my blood.

rp said...

the hit was not a charge, i do agree with some of you on that. But with that said, malone did hit martin with his hands-to-elbows (the process of the hit) directly to the head,( big no-no) which the WCHA is concentration on eliminating. He should be suspended for a least 2-4 games if not more. its just like football, a good hit is with the shoulder with contact to the crest on the players jersey not the head!!

SIOUX 7 said...

If you want to talked suspension, look at what the league has done in the past. No player has received more than a 1 game suspension from the league. And I don't think that will change with this incident either.

I look at it through my "Green Glasses", Genoway got checked from behind last year, missed the rest of the season, SCSU's Marvin got a one game. As DU fans are aware of Paukovich got one game for breaking UNDs Bina's neck. Back then I applauded Gwoz for also givng Paukovich a one game suspension.

Lets face it, the league has set the standard fine at 1 game. I'm not saying it is right, but that is the going rate in the WCHA for a head/neck injury.

SIOUX 7 said...

Heres good wishes and a speedy recovery to Jesse Martin.

I demand DG to remove any jerks' posts who come on here trying to start crap on this topic. This is not a time to trash talk - this is a time to pray. I was one of the very few DU fans at the game.... in sect 107 right next to the lower student section...and let me tell you, the place turned sombre when they wheeled Martin out of there. NOBODY was smiling or happy about it - that's a terrible thing to post here. Get well soon, JMart.

dggoddard said...

So far everyone has been really respectful and the UND fans have shown a lot of class on here.

This is a horrible situation, but I am confident that Jesse will pull through this with all the courage and conviction that he showed us during his career at DU.

I'm equally confident that the DU community stands ready to help in any way possible.

cis429 said...

I had/have no intention of inciting anything. Jesse's well-being is I'm sure first and forement on EVERYONE's mind.

What really bothered me was North Dakota's captain and coach complaining about the penalty after the game rather than solely expressing concern for Jesse Martin. I will try to give them the benefit of the doubt and guess they did not know the extent of his injury.

I hope there is some mention of Jesse prior to the start of the Friday game. I would love to see everyone stand in a moment of silence.

I would rather see the whole barn give him a rousing standing ovation!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This may or may not have been a charge. None of the video here provides enough information to show if Malone is merely a fast and powerful skater who was already moving quickly or if he indeed took an excessive number of strides before delivering the hit).

However, the hit WAS perfect for the NCAA's (newly strengthened) "head contact" call. From the angles presented by both camera views, I believe it is clear that contact was made with the arm, directly to the facemask. This was a head on collision (not an east-west hit), and Martin had his head down, but this should have been a head contact call.

Review the NCAA's 2010 Rules Enforcement video, specifically the section on head contact calls (http://web1.ncaa.org/web_video/ice_hockey/2010/2010_mih_rules_reinff.html - the head contact section starts at about 6:59) and expect this hit to be in next year's rules enforcement video.

Anonymous said...

I have watched the hit in real time and in slow motion and it is clear that Malone followed through with his hand/stick in a punching motion and not with his arm or shoulder. I don't know if I would categorize it as an overtly "dirty" hit but it was illegal head contact nonetheless.

I will say that even though the hit was illegal, you see these types of hits now and then during the course of a season and normally the player bounces right back up or has the wind knocked out of him and returns to action later in the game. Can't say that I can recall a player sustaining an injury of this magnitude without hitting the dasher or the boards.

Anonymous said...

"I applauded Gwoz for also givng Paukovich a one game suspension."

Will Hakstol do the same?

First and foremost my thoughts and prayers go out to Jesse Martin and his family.

For those of you unfamiliar with Grand Forks community, I would like to point something out. Just about everyone in GF either: plays hockey, is a good friend of a hockey player, or has a child or other relative who plays hockey. This injury is a worst case scenario for us and in the back of our minds we all know that could be our loved one lying there motionless on the ice, whether we admit it or not.

I can only speak for myself, but I know there are many others; my hearth jumped into my throat when Jesse didn't get up from that hit and it is still there to a certain extent. I wanted to craw out of my own skin when they brought out the stretcher and I clapped when he left the ice, but that did not take away the deep concern that I had for his well being.

To insinuate that anyone was laughing or had a lack of concern for Jesse’s safety, including the players and staff, is disgusting and classless. The people seated near me were visibly saddened and voiced concern. For all but a hapless few morons, that permeate all of society; I believe the feeling is mutual.

This is bigger than hockey!

Martin's call to Malone is one of the greatest pieces of collegiate sportsmanship I've seen in my 30+ years of follwing sports.

Jesse: You made us all even prouder to be Pioneers.

SiouxFanatic said...

Jesse Martin is a very classy person. To worry about another besides worrying over himself is very touching and goes to show that this goes beyond any rivalry or the game of hockey.

I may consider Denver University a 'rival' but Jesse Martin is a class act and I have nothing but respect for him, his family and DU.

Anonymous said...

I am a UND fan & was at the game, I can tell you that NO ONE in our section, the sections on either side of us or above us was smiling or laughing. Everyone that I have talked to is just sick about this injury. I know Brad & I know that he feels horrible about this & it really was a class act for Jesse to call him. My thought & prayers are with Jesse, his family & also with his teammates. My nephews bot play hockey & but for the grace of God go I.
For those DU fans who are screaming for Brad's head - I understand, however you may want to dig out the video of Paukovich's hit from behind, after the whistle on Robbie Bina before throwing stones in glass houses.

Anonymous said...

No one is calling for anyone's head. We're from Denver, not North Dakota. Let the league handle any discipline. Malone understandably feels bad enough for what he did to Martin.

Anonymous said...

Not his head but Hakstol should bench Malone. If you want to trot out the ol Robbie Bina story then you should be willing to accept the same penalty that Gwoz gave Paukovich.

Anonymous said...

I disagree that he should be benched for a game. Pauko's hit was from behind on Bina and was very very dangerous. Granted there was contact to the head with the hit by Malone, but it really comes down to a 212lb guy moving full speed checking a 180lb guy who was stationary and didn't have a chance to avoid the hit/brace himself with just about the worst possible outcome. Malone will beat himself up over the hit and that is punishment enough.

Anonymous said...

I know Malone feels terrible about this hit, but if you commit the crime, you do the time. The bottom line is this is irrefutably an illegal hit that the NCAA has made an emphasis of cracking down upon.

Just like Pauko got suspended, so should Malone. I can't argue him receiving more than 1 game but I believe it would be the right thing to do for Hakstol to implement an additional game penalty.

Anonymous said...

Well, Malone arguably did do the time for his crime during the game - he was kicked out and UND had a 5 minute major to kill off.

I completely agree that there was an illegal hit to the head - no question. At this point It is ultimately up to the powers that be in the WCHA as to whether Malone should be suspended and for how long. A one game suspension by Hakstol won't solve the overall problem of illegal contact to the head.

Does the WCHA send a message to the players in the league and suspend Malone for a lengthy period of time? If they truly want to ban hits to the head then they really need to demonstrate that they mean business and impose a lengthy suspension. Just as suspensions for fighting took that element out of college hockey, perhaps truly stiff penalties for head contact such as what occurred to Martin are in order. Short of that I don't see how there will be any change among the players and this will continue to occurr.

dggoddard said...

The WCHA has two choices.

1). Make Malone the scapegoat and suspend him 1-10 games.

OR

2). Admit that the sport is completely unsafe and do nothing.

Choice #2 opens themselves up for litigation IMO.
