(above) Magness Arena will host the first presidential debate next year |
Chancellor Coombe hosted a press conference about the announcement this afternoon. Denver Mayor Michael Hancock also spoke at the Press conference.
The national and international spotlight will be on the University of Denver during this historic event. It will be the first Presidential Debate ever held in Colorado.
After the debate at DU there will be one on Oct. 16 at Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y., and the final debate at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Fla., on Oct. 22 — about two weeks before Election Day.

If there was ever a time to drop the "CC Sucks" banner from the rafters, this would be it. Over 3,000 reporters will be in attendance.
This is great for the University. Great visibility, great press, and great way to get the name out there.
You might end up in Guantanamo Bay if you tried a stunt like that.
An expenses paid vacation to Cuba might be fun.
bstro3,000 reporters - Maybe we can get Shawn Ostrow to ask the first question....
This is fantastic for DU. The first debate is the one everyone watches.
OK, we know DG will have a fist full of tickets, are you going to share them among your friends?
Huge win for DU.
Every DU student and UU alum (and Denver citzen) should be proud that our school is going to host a historic event.
Doubtful that I will be in a position of leverage to get tickets.
DU needs to raise $1.3 million to pay the hosting rights fee. Those donors will be getting a chunk of the tickets.
The Chancellor promised today that DU students will get a crack at the tickets as well.
Guessing that Magness will hold 8-10,000 for this event.
Hold on here - this actually has possible signigicant hockey implications. That's the week we usually have our 1st exhibition game of the season. The conversion crew will have thier hands full, if they schedule a hockey game that week. Could cause the ice surface to be wishy-washy. When the Ultimate Fighting Championship was in there before a hockey game a couple years ago, the ice was trashed because of the heat from the lights. I'm thinking this debate could easily do that, and probably worse.
If all else fails, DU can probably find somewhere else to play the exhibition game. Random thoughts--Denver Coliseum, CC World Arena, or some rinky dink arena in Denver where DU would lose gate money, but would still be able to get a game under their belt. But I bet they'll be able to get the ice in decent enough shape. Even if the ice sucks, I'm sure no one at DU is thinking about that much, in light of the national exposure will get from the debate.
Oh for sure. Right now, I'd plan on DU playing an away exhibition game. With all the security involved.... they won't even mess with trying to have a hockey game that week. Maybe DU will go to Regina
I would hate to think we would miss a hockey game for these two liars!
They could have the debate on a small platform in center ice and the hockey game played around the center ice blockage. Based on previous presedential "canned" responses, the game would be more interesting.
Plus, fully costumed Boone should be allowed to chair the debate.
Seriously amazing for DU. There are 3,000+ colleges they could have chosen in America (not to mention all the other potential debates sites), and they chose us.
This event has some amazing national media potential and is worth every last nickel they paid for the bid fee to host it.
Every serious high school junior/senior is going to be watching (prospective students), and with 3,000 global media planted on our campus, you could hardly ask for a better media exposure.
Coombe may not be the greatest chancellor we've ever had, but this event is a major feather in his cap. These things don't get awarded by accident, and a lot people worked very hard to reel in this big fish.
Bravo.
Makes me wanna see Rick Perry as the GOP candidate...an intelligent black man taking a dumbass Texan good 'ol boy to the woodshed is always a good time
Have to agree with Aluum, Boone should be the moderator. Ot better yet a 3rd party candidate. :-}
We can't have Boone run, it would split the ticket. He could; however, provide entertainment during commercial breaks.
