Boone's Tavern To Open 11/11/11

The B.U.F.F. Brothers group of bars and restaurants has broken up. After thirteen years, Rob Lanphier split from his business partner last month and started his own company, Pour Kids. Boone's Tavern, which is slated to open Friday, November 11, at 1135 East Evans Avenue (the former home of Smugs and, for decades before that, Fagan's).

The joint is named after Denver Boone, the University of Denver's official mascot from 1968 to 1998; Lanphier was surprised that no one in the DU area had used the name before. Boone's will be part of what he envisions as Pour Kids' "state-triotic" — think "patriotic" — concept, which focuses on locally sourced beer, spirits and food. "All our beers are going to be from Colorado," Lanphier says. "About half of our liquors are going to be from Colorado, and we'll be trying to do as much Colorado-sourced food as humanly possible."

Boone's will also mark Lanphier's first foray into barbecue; a longtime buddy of his will be running the smoker. "The thing we try to strive for is having great food, basically," he says. "Better food than people would expect in a neighborhood tavern. Our kitchen is about an 85-percent scratch kitchen."

While Boone's will essentially be a neighborhood sports bar with a lot of TVs, Lanphier plans to book solo and duo acoustic acts on the weekends. And while the DU crowd will be his focus, he's also hoping to draw people who work at nearby Porter Hospital and other folks who live or work in the area. "I think they'll like something they can walk to, where they can have some barbecue and a bunch of beers and appreciate it," he says.

Will DG eat/drink here or at the D.U.G.S. event prior to the CC game?

That makes four DU-themed bars surrounding campus - Crimson and Gold Tavern (east) Boone's Tavern (west), The Pioneer (South) and the Campus Lounge (North). I suppose

Great to see this - hope it's good.

DG is going to hit them all before the CC game as well as the D.U.G.S. event? No wonder he wears a size 57.

That's a joke boy!

Hitting the various establishments pre and post game is what makes DU hockey a unique experience. The fact that they are all locally owned and not chains is a huge bonus.

Man how great is this? Drop in to Porter's, have a hip replaced, then hobble over to Boone's for beer and barbeque.

One might say that it will turn your life around.

Have a hip replaced? How old are you guys?

Porter Hospital has an annoying joint replacement commercial that's been playing on DU hockey games for years. That's what the guys are talking about.

That cracked me up Old Pio :-)

As an 'out of towner' I'm not geo familiar, but perhaps a Magness game shuttle might further entice potential patrons (reduce DUI risk and increase paid consumption!)

I'm not too familiar either, but I know that The Pioneer restaurant has (or at least did have) a shuttle. Not sure if other locations do too. It's a great idea for those places with a slightly longer walk to get more business.

Is there a place to park at Boone's Tavern?

With the previous establishments, there was a small parking lot in back, maybe 7-10 spaces?

Boone's Tavern may be too far to walk for our more senior posters like Old P or those that may have over imbibed like … the rest of us.

Don't be a dick...Old Pio can run circles around you, underestimate him at your own peril

I wonder when 'Ol P will make a Magness trip...

Boone's Tavern will be wall to wall people the night of the Presidential debate. Interesting to think that when Drew & Dusty and the guys finally present Obama with his 2012 Denver jersey (after DU wins in Tampa), 6 months later, Obama will be back in Magness where it all started for Drew & Dusty.

Thanks for the article. I can't wait to serve my fellow DU alumni. For those looking for an easy way back and forth to the game the 21 RTD bus stops directly in front of our doors and there is a pickup right near Driscoll bridge. Thanks for helping to be a part of the DU community.
