DU's Parking Scofflaw Finally Gets Diploma

(above) Jacob Bakker gets his DU Diploma seven years later
Jacob Bakker graduated from from the University of Denver in 2004, but he had one problem. Over $2,000 in unpaid campus parking tickets.  DU withheld mailing him his Diploma for the past seven years.

Yesterday the Diploma unexpectedly showed up in the mail.

Statute of limitations expired? Pardoned by the Chancellor? Clerical error by DU staffer?

Who says, "Crime doesn't pay?"

DU's White Whale?

Everyone hates parking nazis at DU & elsewhere. But why would this dude want to advertise his deadbeat status on a blog? He's nearing 30 years old--too old (in my humble opinion) to brag about not paying your debts. Carry on...

When Obama attended Harvard he accumulated eight parking tickets from Somerville,a city where he rented an apartment. Those tickets are still unpaid.

Yeah there are a bunch of people getting their Diplomas in the next few months from 5-12 years out. The University is cleaning house and going through everyone's files to make sure everyone that has asked about their Diplomas gets them or gets an appeal form to get them.

Just saw this come through on Fox News...Obama has just put forth new legislation to raise taxes on the rich to pay for his outstanding parking tickets.

So it's not just me? I got my master's degree in the mail yesterday after 13+ years because I had $300 in unpaid parking tickets.

Not bragging about not paying my debts. I prefer to think of my sheepskin as the Nelson Mandela of degrees.

As a 2004 grad, He should've received a Dan Ricthie-signed diploma, not a Bob Coombe-signed diploma.

Coombe became Chancellor in 2005.

@ 4:03 PM : Coombe was the Provost and signed the diploma on the right hand side. Ritchie did sign the diploma on the lower left side of the diploma. Above Ritchie is Joy Burns.

DU told me to pay my fines or I wouldn't get my diploma. I went to registrar's office the day before graduation and paid up. When I returned to my car, I had another ticket.

The photo and blurb was originally posted on Denver Boone's Facebook page. People left funny comments and the story just picked up steam.
