Denver Post: DU-UND Rivalry Reaches New Heights

From: Denver Post
by Mike Chambers

The intense rivalry between the University of Denver and North Dakota won't have a chance to simmer when the teams engage in a two-game series at Magness Arena this weekend.

The Pioneers and Fighting Sioux once again are fighting for the same things — jockeying for a home-ice slot in the first round of the league playoffs and a berth in the NCAA Tournament.

Denver (18-10-4) is third in the league — three points ahead of North Dakota (17-11-3), which is in a three-way tie for fourth. In the national picture, the Pioneers are tied for 11th in the PairWise Rankings and the Sioux are 14th [read entire article].

No Bennett & Makowski this week or next.

I am starting to wonder if either one will return for the playoffs.

A statewide referendum will be held in June as voters decide the fate of the logo & nickname. Supporters gathered 17,000 signatures to place the issue on the ballot.

Man, I don't even remember how Makowski got hurt, it was so long ago. Did he get checked in the head or something? I hope he is back soon. Having to contend with both Makowski and LaLeggia would give teams fits.

And by the way, how hilarious was the Wisconsin broadcasters tortured pronunciation of "La-Le-gee-uah" in the 2 broadcasts last weekend. I was laughing, but wanting to chuck my remote at the TV at the same time. Another thing--the guy on Saturday night complaining about players from both teams falling down when they got checked from behind??? WTF was that about? Those guys made me appreciate Charlie Host and the other guy on Root.

The only broadcasters who are worse than those two guys are the two sioux annonuncers. Those guys have gone without seeing the sun way too long.

Since half the state can't ready, I assume an X by their name will count.

The last time the Sioux were in town I had a group of ND fans sitting behind us that yelled "home of the Sioux" at the end of the National Anthem. I called them out on this and of course they responded with a profanity laden response.

I don't care who does this, there is no place for this kind of disrespect. I have no problem supporting your team, but try to be civil about it.

A Sux fan sitting in front of me did the very same home of the ... thing. I waited until he sat down a kicked him in the back of the head. He didn’t say a peep for the rest of the game.

We need to show a little empathy for our friends from the great north. On a Friday or Saturday night (or any night for that matter) just let yourself contemplate the options in Denver. Museums, night clubs, professional sports, etc. In Grand Forks, apart from the Sioux, what is there? A bunch of cheap bars populated by tattooed diesel dykes who will go down on you for ten bucks (sometimes less). That might be an enjoyable distraction once a year or so, but not every freakin' week.

As some one posted earlier, that's why potential recruits are brought to GF at night.

Clam jousting is a time honored tradition in the Dakota Territory.

Hey come on now - I've been there. There's a Perkins in Grand Forks. And the Canadian hotel. And a truck stop and a rail yard. But let me tell ya....The Indian depicted on their famous logo is more attractive then most of the women who live there.

To be fair, you guys should listen to the DU student section at the end of the National Anthem if you're so offended by the Sioux. They yell "home of the Pioneers" just the same.

That's true. You're actually supposed to stand, in respect, until the home players all whack therr stick on the ice.....

I love how you all just bash the state of ND and not the hockey team. Not a huge surprise that Colorado has more to offer than North Dakota. I'm pretty sure up until 30 years ago Denver was still considered a "cow town". And the "home of the Sioux" is called a TRADITION that has been around longer than your hockey team!!

I wish the students didn't yell the "home of the Pioneers" too. But, to be fair, the people above were commenting on fans in an away arena being obnoxious. Really not the same as being obnoxious in your own arena.

There's a certain fan etiquette that the Sioux don't follow on the road. I think a large reason for that is that so many Sioux fans live in Denver and don't feel like they are "away". They are at home and act like it.

Just for the record, Miller, it was me quoting Frank Serratore about bringing recruits in at night to Grand Forks. I think he was kidding. Afterwards, some illiterate putz attributed the quote to TOM Serratore.

Of course Frank also once referred to Boone as "that f****t." Although to be fair I believe he was wanting a more overtly masculine mascot. Like Hilary Clinton.

GOP Contenders Agree: Fighting Sioux Suck

Last night, in the last of several GOP primary debates, the remaining four contenders could agree on only one point: The North Dakota Fighting Sioux hockey team sucks. Rep. Ron Paul observed that the team’s very existence is unconstitutional. Governor Mitt Romney said that while he is critical of over-reach by the Obama administration, the president would be fully justified in bombing the University of North Dakota to smithereens. Speaker Newt Gingrich argued that, like Iran, the Fighting Sioux “are a big problem requiring a big solution” and suggested that the U.S. launch preemptive strikes against both Tehran and Grand Forks. Social conservative Sen. Rick Santorum was highly critical of the “phony religion” of the Fighting Sioux. He said the team’s coach, Dave Hackstol, brings a long history of unethical, immoral and reprehensible behavior to the play of his club through roster changes over many years.

Media outlets and political pundits noted that the approval ratings of all four candidates rose markedly immediately following the broadcast of this debate.

Speaking of debates, don't forget, in October the Presidential debate will be held at Magness Arena.... and it will screw up Denver's first couple weekends for 2012. i wouldn't expect a DU home game until atleast the 3rd week in Oct. Come to think of it though - North Dakota does suck. And CC swallows.
