Wisconsin 1 - DU 0 FINAL

“We’re not looking to go to Sunday.  We’re going to end this tonight.”
UW freshman defenseman Jake McCabe

Sean Little of the University of Wisconsin scored his second goal of the season with just over five minutes remaining in the 3rd Period on Friday night at Magness Arena. DU had plenty of opportunities to score throughout the evening, but was never able to capitalize.

DU falls to #13 in the Pairwise Rankings.

I didn't get to see or watch most of the game till half way in the 3rd. Sounds like both teams played strong defensively, but that goal Wisconsin got was a superstar play. What can you do.

Our season and tournament hopes will be on the line the rest of the weekend.

All hands on deck tomorrow night. This a DU team that scores goals in bunches and they'll need to get untracked early or else the season is down the drain.

Wisconsin has been on the road for three straight weekends, so perhaps the fatigue will set in, although there was no sign of that tonight.

One more game before the boys that want to leave for their next teams leave. Where were all the stars tonight besides watching the clock.

DU was the better team for the first two periods, but UW was a little better in the third and got rewarded for hanging around. It was tight plaoff hockey - both teams had chancesm and both goalies were good. It was one of those games where DU did not bury the chances, and UW was able to bury one.

This is a very precarious situation. DU is 1-10 against UW in the WCHA playoffs. For some reason, DU does well against UW in the regular season, but not well in the playoffs.

If DU doesn't bounce back and win the next two, the season is likely over. DU has bounced back from losses all year long, so we'll see what this team is made of.

That Alabama-Huntsville loss and the Bennett injury are looming very large right now. Someone must step up or it's over.

zuck is not N.H.L. ready based on what I have seen tonight and a few previous games.

Tough loss for DU tonight. The Pios had chances in all 3 periods but no one could bury it. The longer that game went on at 0-0, the more uneasy I felt. Pios looked a bit tired at the end.

Give Wisconsin credit. They played a good road game, got solid goaltending, and pounced on an opportunity late. They were sloppy at times with the puck in their own end, especially early, but DU couldn't capitalize. The Badgers are better than their record indicates, but they are certainly not elite. This is a team that DU should beat. It's do or die tomorrow.

DU's power play, which is among the nation's best looked very tentative and a did not move with efficiency. Gwoz better make some adjustments - UW always blocks shots.

Denver was not in very good form tonight. I did not see a team that's going to Florida in a month. With play like that - the only way they'll see Florida is on Summer break going to Walt Disney World with their parents

Actually, DU played pretty well tonight. They skated, they hit, they got lots of grade A shots, and they played with skills, passion and solid goaltending.

The UW kid (McCabe) made a highlight reel goal and that was the difference. That's hockey sometimes.

I did not see that new kid Larazza or Knowlton on the bench (we sit 2 rows up from the DU bench). Don't tell me they're hurt too??

Great student turnout tonight. Does anyone else think that the intro video this year was as amazing as I think it is? Love seeing it every time.

Was tonight loosey goosey enough for you DG?.......idiot.

Here's to Bucky taking DU out of the National Tourney.

The intro video is way to long. And would DU please have someone sing the National Anthem as it was written. To hear last nights rendition was painful. I dont think this team is going anywhere. I hate to say that but I think its true.

Serious question. You have 3 goalies on your team. One is 8-7-3. Another is 5-3-0. The other is 8-2-1.

Who do you put in to get a WIN when the season is on the line? I'm not talking who's "better" or who will give up the least amount of goals. I'm talking about who will get the W. Who's presence on the ice perhaps sparks something in the team where they go out and play better than they normally do.

Old Pio's prediction was correct. DU played without heart. Unless Jackson and Shore can get the boys to put it all on the line, the season is over.

Anonymous said...

Shore is a great player just not a very good leader.

Gwoz didn't pick the right leadership to lead this team this year. When you handout "C"s and "A"s to players because you want them to come back for another year instead of going to "NHL" or because they come back for a 5th year of school, this isn't how you create leadership on the team. The two other "A"s on the team aren't leaders either. Gwoz and coaching staff really need to do their homework this off season and pick a "C" who can lead this team and it won't be a draft pick or a leader from this year. Do your homework George or you will have another year like this year. The leader is staring you in the face do the right thing if you want leadership.

WHY didn't anybody at LetsGoDU think to invite Peyton Manning to the game? That would have been a sure-fire win for DU, to have Denver's new quarterback make his first official public appearance, at a DU Hockey game. DAMMIT!!!!

It was wise for UW to spend the cash and put the team in the same hotel as the Edmonton Oilers...THAT is motivation.

This DU program has not been swept by a WCHA team since 2008. There IS some heart on that team and in that locker room. But they will need to step up once again and prove it on the ice. They know what is at stake, and they will respond, I hope.

That said, the one thing I'd like to see more of in all DU sports is mental toughness. The women's and men's hoops teams got knocked out of the SBC tourneys before they should have, not for lack of skill or athleticism but because the level of mental toughness was not as strong as their opponents. Mental toughness is part pride, part confident swagger, part coolness under pressure and part sheer willpower. If the hockey team cannot regain this element of their game this weekend, their season will end early, too.

What does losing a game have to do with not being a leader? Nobody on this blog knows anything about these players or what goes on within their own world.
The leaders were chosen by their teammates and coaches and to question them shows just how little you know about these young men's character. Refrain from going down that road because of one game. Stand behind them or not but don't talk negative about a subject you know nothing about.

Fair weather DU fans at their best.

Any jersey pumping last night? Oh, I guess you have to score first...sorry;)

I'm going with another cardinal out tonight....go bucky!!

12:58 is correct. Absolutely. Correct.

Too many dipchits watch from the stands, thinking they are somebody or somehow connected to the team.

Newsflash: You dipchits are just farkin fans who basically have no farkin clue as to what is actually going on. Even though you think you do.

12:58, perfectly said and you couldn't be more right.

This argument always come up when a season is on Death's door and it really bothers me. People look at the talent on the team or whatever and have no other explanation so they go straight for slamming the leadership.

I agree with several of the other posters above who think that DU does have the heart and character to pull out a victory tonight.

Go DU!

From USCHO Bracketology thread:

"The good news for anyone on the bubble (or who could get there with losses) is that the CCHA has a four team logjam from 14-18. #14 Michigan State was shutout 6-0 last night and could be done tonight. #18 Notre Dame is also facing elimination at the hands of Michigan. #16 Northern Michigan is already done. #15 Western Michigan is the only favorite to continue after tonight. #17 Merrimack can also be done tonight. That would mean teams that are already in position for tournament bids will lock them up even with losses. Denver, Lowell and BU could be eliminated from the conference playoffs but clinch a berth anyway because no one else can catch them. It could very well be that the field we see now is the field we get for the NCAA."

His argument seems to make sense. It still seems that we would be out with a loss either tonight or Sunday, but maybe there's some hope.

Don't make plans to go to Grandma's for Sunday dinner. This is going to 3 games. I will be shocked if Denver doesn't win tonight. They usually respond very positively after going down like that on Friday. Tonight is not gut check night.... tomorrow might be.... for both these teams. But crap; I'm going to miss "60 Minutes" tomorrow night because I'll be at a DU hockey game. Just sayin'

Shore and Jackson are two big guys that aren't tough enough to get the job done,

The best thing about DU hockey is their fan base and how much they take losses to heart. I feel bad for all 12 of you. On Wisconsin!!
