DU Snags California Recruit Garrett Gamez

Chris Heisenberg's Recruiting Website has announced that talented Los Angeles forward Garrett Gamez [6'0" 170 lbs.] will attend the University of Denver in 2014.  Gamez has been considered one of the top junior forwards in California since he was 12 years old.

Gamez turned down an opportunity to play in the USHL this season, so that he could continue developing in California.

D.G. In the 2012 class who are the standout players?

Personally, I would have to think that Shore, Mermis and Zajac will have the most initial impact. Van Voorhis should contribute and I'm sure Levin will chip in at least a few points. The rest of them...I'm not sure but one of them may surprise, who knows...

DU trailing in lacrosse 13-8 with 8 minutes to play.

Poster above seems to have a good pulse on the 2012 class.

Van Voorhis is going back to Sioux Falls for another year according to the Sioux Falls newspaper.

I believe Tyler Pham is also returning to Indiana. Didn't see much ice time this year and wouldn't see much at DU next year either. Going back to Indy is whats best for the kid. Good player, he will fit in just fine in Denver, just needs another year.

Kind of skews the view on this kid. USHR reported that this past year was Gamez's first year of AAA hockey. Don't know of many top kids in their age group grow up playing AA their whole life like the story so indicates.

Good pick-up though for DU. Late bloomer. Powerful player, should make an impact.

Interesting about Van Voorhis. I found the article you referred to and it looks like he'll spend another year in the USHL.

The article also mentioned that he was a "forward." All the stats and rosters list him as a Dman, so not sure what is going on.

At 5'7 170 lbs. it would not surprise me if they were converting him to forward and that would also help explain another season in the USHL.

Looks pretty thin if you ask me.

He's a Sophomore in high school. Guessing he's one of the larger kids in his class.

Doubtful size will be an issue by the time he gets to DU.

DU graduated 5 players [Goal Czar, Dewhurst, Jackson, Lee & Ryder].

3 players left early [D.Shore, Zucker & Bennett]

6 Freshmen are coming in [Mermis, Allen, Zajac, Q.Shore, Arnold & Levin]

Looks to me like DU has two more forwards to bring in. Either they bring in one or two guys from the 2013 recruiting class [Hawkinson and/or Smith] OR they go shopping for late bloomers in Canada, Europe, NAHL, USHL or find someone to change their commitment [Wiercioch/LaLeggia]

Good move for DU. Niether Van Voorhis or Pham was producing in Junior, so they weren't going to produce as collegians.

I'd like to see DU bring in an experienced overager or two. Those guys may not be NHL material, but they would add some experience to a DU team that has been gutted by graduation and early signings. PLuse you can often get four years of them.

When the hell will Wade "boom Boom" Bennett ever skate again? Might be our trump card someday. And where the hell are all the NAHL recruits on this list?? That league just doesn't get respect; and for the life of me I have no idea why. Keep your eyes on Doremus. Just sayin...........

Followed Bennett in Jrs.Smart player not flashy ,seems underrated for what he brought to his teams.Saw him one game play both forward and D in the third period every other shift.
