North Dakota Voters Ban Fighting Sioux Logo

(above) North Dakota voters gave the two finger salute to the Fighting Sioux logo on Tuesday
Voters in North Dakota on Tuesday overwhelmingly endorsed a proposal to abolish the state university's "Fighting Sioux" nickname and Indian head logo, banned under a national college sports policy that deems such symbols as racially offensive.

More than 67 percent of voters supported the move that will allow the University of North Dakota to end its use of the nickname and logo - based on a Native American caricature - in order to avoid possible sanctions by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

However, supporters of the symbol have said they will continue their fight to retain the "Fighting Sioux" name and logo after years of appealing to alumni and to the state Legislature, which just last year passed a law to keep the images, only to then reverse itself with a repeal.

The university's alumni association and foundation had stayed neutral on the topic for decades, but in early February stepped in to support retiring the nickname and logo, spending $250,000 on the issue.

LOL...trounced...

I read somewhere that the supporters of the Fighting Sioux nickname will pursue an amendment to their state constitution, in order to protect the name.

Stupid supporters trying to abuse their constitution... constitutions are there to protect and broaden individual rights, not to protect an obviously unpopular (and abusive--and hostile) nickname.

Unfortunately, they will continue to chant "home of the sioux) at the end of the National Anthem.

It's ridiculous for any DU fan to take joy in this considering what we have been / are going through with Boone...

Oh my god, what a waste of time this issue is. The people have spoken. Move on! I suggest the name of "North Dakota Fracking Fluids."

Agree with 11:07.

DU fans know all about 'offensive' mascots, and the whole 7 year mascot fight/ordeal at UND has been far more divisive than any mascot could ever be.

Slow times in DU blogville?...... Is this blog about DU hockey or UND? You need to get some therapy about your infatuation with UND.

Actually, I think UND might learn something from DU on this one. Trying to snuff out the Indian, is going to be very much like Denver trying to snuff out Boone.... they'll NEVER be able to control it. The UND administration will stand thier ground for a year or so - but the students will be overwhelming, and the'll have to eventually acknowledge tonto as an unofficial, student-led representation. You can see it coming. So North Dakota fans... you're welcome. Boone laid the ground work for you on this one. Just sayin

Um, OK...however, Boone was not ruled illegal in a pubic referendum...big, HUGE, difference...Boone was retired by some tired administrators -- the fighting pioux was dissed by the entire state...LOL...

I am totally in favor of the Fighting Sioux mascot and totally against politically-correct tyranny of the minority. That said, the overall population of NoDak, the people that pay for UND via their taxes (rather than their wishy-washy politicos) have now spoken. Time for the big chief to be put to rest.

Go UND Big Forkers...

May I suggest some new names for the UND sweaters?

--I went to UND and all I got was this damn sweater
--Call if you're my daddy
--Beet Suckers
--University of Only Choice

What in the flying fuck is ScottA talking about? 67% represent a "minority"????? You are as clueless as they come!!!!

ScottA said...

The 'tyrannical minority' would be the politicos or the indians or the NCAA that tried to force the change on the entire tax-paying constituency of the state. Now that that there has been a state-wide vote, majority rules...as it should be. You need to learn how to read.

Anonymous said...

You still make no sense, whatsoever...and I can read... and you are an imbecile...

How the fuck is there a "tyrannical minority" that enforces anything when the majority speaks? The "minority" you speak of actually represents a VAST majority of the state which is impacted by this vote!

You are as clueless as your stupid-ass argument involving the NCHC tourney showed.

Maybe some comb-through hair-darkening can save you??? Well, Nah....

Anyway..."Indians" ??....I didn't know people from India cared about NCAA D1 hockey...I suppose you meant Native Americans??? You come off as pretty clueless...

Inasmuch as I would really like to see North Dakota keep their Fighting Sioux nickname, it looks as though the majority have spoken and it would be best for all if UND goes ahead and finds a new identity the sooner they get moving on this the better. In that light I'd be more than happy to make a few suggestions:

The North Dakota Fighting Flickertails
The North Dakota Sunflowers
The North Dakota Misslemen
The North Dakota Northern Pikes
The North Dakota Snow Snakes
The North Dakota Flat Landers
The North Dakota Grand Forkers
The North Dakota Snuggle Bunnies
The North Dakota Corn Feeders
The North Dakota Norse Men
The North Dakota.....ahhhh you get the picture.

Have fun with it and make some of your own suggestions.

I got a clue to sell to scotta...Any bidders? It's a pretty frickin rare commodity for this guy...

I say the: North Dakota Tree(less)-Huggers

May I suggest "The Drinking Pigf*ckers" as UND's new nickname and a caricature of a big fat sow's face bearing a partially edentulous(that means missing some teeth for you nice folks from North Dakota who can read)smile as the new logo?

How about the "Frivolous Figpuckers"?

Now, that I could support...LOL...

People from India don't appreciate being called Indians. If you are going to try to be politically correct, you shuould be sensitive to the cultures that you're referencing.

How many students attending DU are from India? How do we get them interested in D1 hockey.

The Boone Solution - have an unofficial mascot funded through private donations and supported by the students and alumni.

Well since they're drilling for oil I vote for..

North Dakota Glory Holes

Anonymous said...

Harumph, I like the idea. Although, it would present a particularly tough challenge when deciding who to root for when they play Bemidji.

Anonymous said...

Look at this, DU's 3 fans having a lively discussion about none other...North Dakota. Go figure.

Anonymous said...

oh look - they let someone poor into the country club.

Looks like there isn't much to talk about regarding your team next year. Is every other topic really about UND or Grand Forks? I go the UND blogs and you are mentioned zero times. Nice one sided rivalry you have. Here's to you finishing below CC!

Anonymous said...

how about the obvious...The Fighting Jackasses. The jackass from the old school show "Hee-Haw" would make a perfect mascot for the team and fans that represent the true meaning of low-life, trailerpark, scumbag jackasses!

Anonymous said...

I guess there are 4 DU fans. Welcome Anon 12:11.

Just like our State has lots to do and support besides one college hockey team, we also enjoy talking about stuff besides our own college hockey team. Go figure. We must be terrible fans of sports since we have too many sports to choose from here.

Without even going to your blogs I bet there was more talk about NHL teams lately than actual College hockey. Yes those players were great NoDak stars, but they just couldn't get past DU's non-stars when they were in college for whatever reason, could they?

Develop a sense of humor plz, ty, and respect those who are better than you.

Respect those who are better than you? This coming from someone who probably just got done doing the car count at a used car lot in aurora.

The good news is that when DU plays in ND, you'll be able to watch a game on TV. That should be a real treat for you guys. Maybe you'll get another game on NBC Sports again this year....if so, I bet it will be against the Sioux.

Harumph said...

Oh my ... some UNDers do have a big of a sense of humor.

I suppose I should take my comment back, a little.

^.^

Harumph said...

And just to be clear; those used cars happen to be American made! So take your Canadian manufactured automotive lovin' butt back to North Dakota.

Harumph said...

There can be only one!!!

Making me make my troll name some-what proper and official ... wasteful.

Not mentioned in your post is who is supporting keeping the name and fighting ND getting rid of it - Native American Tribes. There are NAs that want to keep the name and suing to do so.
