I'd have to agree with 'Anon'

With Phillips steering the ship the Pios should be led to ultimate GLORY this year.

Im expecting big years from the big blue liners, particularly the captain PP and the Montreal prospect Josiah Didier (AKA: Le Bleu Blanc Rouge)

DU Hockey appeared on Root Sports 7 times last year.

12 times in 2010-11.

19 times in 2009-10.

The added exposure for basketball cuts into the hockey telecast budget.

Great to also get three games on NBC SportsNetwork.

All in all we'll probably see the Pios on TV around 15 times this year counting road games on different networks.

The downward trend in games televised is a bit concerning.

Does anyone know if this is DU cutting back? Or if it's Root? I assume that Root requires DU to pay the production costs and it being DU cutting back, not Root.

It costs somewhere around $20,000- 30,000 per game to produce a game on Root Sports.

I would guess DU has to pay out more money to Root for the timeslot than they make on ad sales. The sad reality is that TV audiences for DU sports are low, so it's no wonder that DU is splitting it's limited TV budget trying to get more traction for hoops.

DU hockey is pretty maxed out on the finacial contirbution it can make, whereas basketball can produce a higher revenue ceiling if they make it the NCAAs.

DU is obviously using the basketball telecasts as an audition platform to get into a better all-sports conference.

DU has 12 games listed on the schedule as being broadcast as live video aka Pioneer Vision. That makes all 21 home games available on TV or on-line.

Why so little games? Only 6 hockey games.

If you read the previous posts, you'll understand why DU is scaling back on hockey and upping basketball broadcasts.

When you are paying for TV time, you need the best return on that investment. They obviously feel that a 50/50 split between hockey and hoops is the right ratio at this point in time to match their strategic goal of growing basketaball and maintaining hockey.
