ROOT SPORTS™ announced today that it will broadcast six regular season University of Denver hockey games, six men’s basketball games and one women’s basketball game this season. This marks the 12th consecutive year, and 19th season overall, the network has been the official television partner of the Pioneers.

ROOT SPORTS Announces DU Hockey TV Lineup

ROOT SPORTS™ announced today that it will broadcast seven regular season DU hockey games, seven men’s basketball games and one women’s basketball game this coming season. This marks the 11th consecutive year, and 18th season overall, the network has been the official television partner of the Pioneers.

ROOT SPORTS’ DU hockey coverage begins Friday, Nov. 4 at 7:30 p.m. MT when the Pioneers host last year’s national champion, Minnesota-Duluth. The Pioneers’ television schedule also includes a game against in-state rival Colorado College on Friday, Feb. 3 at 7 p.m. MT. In total, six WCHA match-ups will air on the network.

FSN Rocky Mountain To Change Name In 2011

DIRECTV Sports Networks announced that the company’s three regional sports networks – FSN Rocky Mountain (with sub-region FSN Utah), FSN Pittsburgh and FSN Northwest – will introduce a new brand identity to become ROOT Sports™ in Spring 2011. FSN-Rocky Mountain televises University of Denver hockey games.

The new ROOT Sports brand has been in research and development for more than a year.

“This rebrand effort is an incredible opportunity for our company to establish a clear, consistent and exciting brand identity for our key stakeholders and viewers,” said Mark Shuken, President and CEO of DIRECTV Sports Networks.

FSN Rocky Mountain has telecast rights to the Colorado Rockies, Utah Jazz, University of Colorado, University of Denver, as well as Big 12 football and women’s basketball, Pac-10 football and basketball and ACC basketball. The network’s serves more than 2.6 million cable and satellite homes in Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Idaho, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico and South Dakota.

FSN Rocky Mountain is based in Denver and is a subsidiary of DIRECTV Sports Networks. The three networks combined reach more than 8.3 million viewers across 18 states. FSN Rocky Mountain will introduce a new brand identity to become ROOT Sports in Spring 2011.

Fox/Dish Network Dispute Will Affect DU Coverage

Dish Network subscribers could have trouble seeing their favorite college hockey team this weekend after Fox Networks blocked 19 regional sports networks in a rate increase dispute.

DU, Minnesota, North Dakota, CCHA and Hockey East games regularly appear on the various Fox Regional channels.

"Fox is demanding a new contract with an unprecedented rate increase of more than 50%," said Dish, in a press release Friday.

A source at Fox, who asked not to be named, referred to the 50% increase as "gross overstatement" on the part of Dish.

Dish (DISH, Fortune 500) accused Fox of trying to "intimidate Dish Network and its customers into paying the rate increase. Fox has flatly refused Dish Network's request to allow customers to continue to watch these Fox channels during the negotiations."

Fox Networks released a statement saying that Dish "decided to no longer carry Fox Networks cable programming" as of midnight, Sept. 30.

FSN-RM To Release DU TV Schedule Soon

FSN-Rocky Mountain will release the DU TV Schedule probably in the upcoming week.

College hockey fans around the United States can watch DU games on FSN-Rocky Mountain via DirecTV (#683), Dish Network (#414) and any local cable provider that carries the Fox Sports Expanded Sports Tier.

DU's TV play-by-play announcer Dan Kelly is adding pro soccer to his resume: He'll be calling televised games for the MLS Chicago Fire this season. Kelly just finished his second season announcing for University of Denver hockey games. Without a doubt Kelly is the best TV announer in college hockey. He was formerly the voice of the St. Louis Blues.

North Dakota & Duluth Kick Off Final Five Tonight

The University of North Dakota are slated to take on Minnesota Duluth tonight at 7 PM (6 PM MST) at the Xcel Energy Center.

The Western Collegiate Hockey Association has suspended North Dakota forward Matt Frattin for tonight's game. Frattin, who was arrested twice earlier this season (disorderly conduct, fleeing from police & DUI), was suspended after he knocked out Minnesota's Kevin Wehrs with a blow to the head.

The Thursday game can be seen live on Fox Sports-Rocky Mountain in Colorado and around the country. The winner will face WCHA champion University of Denver on Friday night in the semifinals.

The University of Denver hockey team will face the winner of North Dakota / Minnesota-Duluth game on Friday night at 6 PM MT.

FSN-Rocky Mountain will air the second semifinal of the 2010 Red Baron WCHA Final Five live from St. Paul, Minn., it was announced today.

DU earned the No. 1 overall seed after winning the WCHA regular-season title and defeating Michigan Tech in two games last week. North Dakota and Minnesota Duluth start the Final Five competition live on FSN Rocky Mountain on Thursday, March 18 at 6 p.m. Wisconsin will take on St. Cloud State in the first semifinal on Fri., March 19 at 2 p.m. The game will air via tape delay at 1:30 a.m. DU's semifinal game will be shown live at 6 p.m. on FSN Rocky Mountain. The championship game will also be televised live on Saturday, March 20 at 6 p.m., followed by the third-place game later that evening at 10 p.m.

Play-by-play duties for the three-day tournament will be split between Frank Mazzocco, Anthony LaPlanta and Jim Rich. Doug Woog and Darby Hendrickson serve as the color analysts, with LaPlanta and Kevin Gorg providing rink-side reporting throughout the tournament.

You have to love Fox Sports-Rocky Mountain. They are bringing in top-flight announcing talent on the DU hockey broadcasts this season. Dan Kelly, Charlie Host, Tom Helmer, Marc Stout and now Boone are forming a college hockey announcing Dream Team.

Boone asked to jump into the broadcast on Friday night and delivered a flawless performance. We'll try and find a YouTube of the video this week. Funny stuff.

News & Notes From Around Pioneer Nation

The University of Wisconsin received a verbal commitment from 16-year-old winger Nick Kerdiles, from Irvine, California. Kerdiles, one of the top 1994-born prospects in North America, will enroll at Wisconsin in 2012, after two years with the U.S. National Team Development Program. Kerdiles took unofficial campus visits to DU and Michigan. Michigan offered him a scholarship, DU had not offered him one at the time of his commitment.

According to DU's Game Notes, Jesse Martin (shoulder) and William Wrenn (hip) are doubtful this weekend with injuries. Martin has missed the last three games, while Wrenn has missed the last four. Brian Gifford (upper body) is questionable after he missed last weekend's nonconference sweep. We're guessing that Gifford will play this weekend, Martin should return in another week or two and Wrenn could be on the shelf for a while.

DU's games can be viewed nationwide this weekend if you have the "FCS Sportspack "from your cable or dish provider. FSN Rocky Mountain, FSN North and FCS Atlantic are televising the games at 7:30 PM MT on Friday, 7:00 PM MT on Saturday. Saturday night's game on FCS Atlantic is being joined in progress one hour after the game starts. Friday night game will be seen fully live.

DU 2 - North Dakota 0 FINAL

The University of Denver scored two goals in the first 3:18 seconds of the game and then held on for a shutout victory over the University of North Dakota. Joe Colborne & Tyler Ruegsegger scored a couple of nice goals for the Pioneers.

Marc Cheverie was the story of the game coming up with big save after save.

North Dakota had a goal disallowed early in the third period, Corban Knight was called for interference just after Carter Rowney beat Cheverie. Officials waved off the goal, accusing Knight of taking down DU defenseman Patrick Wiercioch. Needless to say Sioux Nation will be crying about it on their way back to the Trailer Park tonight.
