DU 5 - UMass Lowell 1 FINAL

(above) DU's big victory earned them front page coverage in the online version of the sports section of the Denver Post
Offensive output was supposed to be a question mark for the University of Denver hockey team coming into this season. In the opening game, the question appears to be answered. DU scored five goals and cruised to a 5-1 victory over the University of Massachusetts-Lowell.

Daniel Doremus scored a career-high two goals and Ty Loney, Nolan Zajac & David Makowski added one apiece.

Sam Brittain threw in 37 saves for good measure.

Great game. Thought Brittain looked solid in net. I like what I saw out of Quentin Shore and Zajac as freshman. Doremus' shot to the top corner was sick. Great way to start the season.

There's a lot more game in Danny Doremus, than most DU fans know. If this was any indication, perhaps he's falling into that "second year coming out phase", like several great players have before. I vote him "most likely to succeed" right now.

Defense looked a lot better. They weren't camped behind their own net wasting time and giving up a turnover in their own zone (aka John Lee). They were moving the puck up and out of the zone efficiently.

Still some timing and rust to work on, but looked promising overall.

Such a great game! Not gonna lie, I was worried about the offense before this game and was pleasantly surprised. Anybody know why there was Dallas Stars players there last night? I saw a bunch in suits and Dallas Stars jackets

alcomo31I happened to be lined up directly behind Doremus on that upper corner goal .The instant he snapped it I didn't see any way he could score. The window was about six square inches. It wasn't luck. He was looking up when he let it go. Bulls Eye.

10.54- Those guys in the Dallas gear were fairly young, I believe they play for Dallas Stars Jr program, who played a Colorado team yesterday. The suits were probably the UML scratches.

or combinations of both.

Great start for DU, but not time to get carried away.

The game was quite close until the dumb penalty by UML that allowed to to break the game open on the 5-3.

The Pios gave up 38 shots, which is not a recipe for success over the long term. Good thing Sammy was on his game.

The thing I like about this team was a strong work ethic and unselfish play, which will serve them well if it continues.

Doremus, Loney and Zajac played very strong games last night, and DU will need them to be that way all year.

Buy; same music playlist in the arena, year after year. Too predictable. I do like the little Tyler Bozak "pump up" video they put on the jumbotron. Did anyone notice it? They need Paul Stasny & Matt Carle to do one of those too. Very cool

The last 5 minutes of the 2nd period were just plain lazy in terms of defense and penalties. I think the biggest thing is that DU rose above that sluggishness in the 3rd. Not like power plays are usually something we take advantage of. 2 for 3 is pretty good. Lowell was good, and fast, until the wheels came off. It will be interesting to see how they do against CC, and likewise how DU does against a hard working team like Air Force.

7 easily winnable games remaining until CC. I think it would be really nice to have at least 6 or 7 wins going into that weekend.

Kneeing game misconduct?... Sounds like a typical DU hack move.
