Gwozdecky's Contract Impasse Has Long History

(above) DU has scheduled a Press Conference for 11 AM today to announce the contract buyout of head hockey coach George Gwozdecky
University of Denver head hockey coach George Gwozdecky was fired yesterday, when the university bought out the final year of his contract.  Gwozdecky had a 10-year contract signed [mid-season] 2002 when DU was the #1 team in the polls and Michigan State and the University of Wisconsin were conducting informal coaching searches. A provision in the contract was a rumored $1 million dollar balloon payout, to be paid at the conclusion of the contract, designed to keep the Gwozdecky at DU for the duration of the contract.

After the 2004 National Championship, DU and Gwozdecky extended the contract to expire after 2013-14 season.  The extension included raises and bonuses that would make him among the highest paid coaches in college hockey at the time [base $250,000-$300,000].

In June 2009 DU signed lacrosse legend Bill Tierney for significantly less than market value and less than Tierney made at Princeton. Suddenly DU is on the map in lacrosse, and the hockey program, for the first time in its history has to share the limelight on campus.

In February 2010 Gwozdecky wanted to extend his current contract to carry him to retirement. Around the same time DU re-upped basketball coach Joe Scott, to become the highest paid employee at the university. At the time, the hoops program was struggling to draw 1,000 fans most games. Someone ran to the Denver Post with all the juicy contract numbers, the basketball attendance numbers and DU's dirty laundry was splashed all over town.

In April 2010, the Ohio State ice hockey job became available and Gwozdecky went from consultant to candidate in the blink of an eye. But to hire Gwozdecky, OSU would have to pay the annuity, give Gwozdecky his money and purchase all the bells and whistles Gwozdecky would need to build a winner. Ohio State, with all the money in the world says, "No thank you."

Throughout the Gwozdecky contract negotiations the Athletic Department remained confident they could re-sign Gwozdecky & Tierney to deals, but there was no hurry with Gwozdecky because of the balloon payment.

Gwozdecky wanted at least to receive rolling four-year extensions so his contract couldn't be used against DU on the recruiting trail. Once it became obvious that DU was not going to agree to an extension, Gwozdecky decided to be the good soldier and fulfill his contract confident that everything would work out.

Between 2010 and today, the University of Denver has been knocked around like a beachball because of conference affiliation issues [WCHA->NCHC, Sunbelt->WAC->Summit League]. DU spent millions trying to find a home for hoops only to discover that hockey, skiing, lacrosse and gymnastics success isn't worth much in the "new world order." Not fielding a football program has made finding a conference home almost impossible.

So the decision was made a few weeks ago to buy out the final year of Gwozdecky's contract and employ the same formula to find a coach they used back in 1994 when hiring Gwozdecky.

If DU gets the candidate they are targeting, you'll find similarities to Gwozdecky hiring in 1996.

N.I.T.: Maryland 62 - Denver 52 FINAL

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Maryland used a small lineup to mount a big comeback in a 62-52 victory over Denver on Thursday night in the second round of the NIT.

Dez Wells scored 19 points for the Terrapins, who closed with a 23-4 run after trailing 48-39 with 9:15 left.

“Our kids battled. We didn’t want the season to end,” coach Mark Turgeon said. “Our big lineup couldn’t guard them so we went small. We went five guards.”

Wells fueled the surge with nine points. It was the sixth game in 12 days for the Terrapins (24-12), who won’t play again until next week against either Alabama or Stanford.

“We’re gassed,” Turgeon said. “Our guys just had guts. That’s a really good win for us after what we’ve been through.”

Chris Udofia scored 24 for the Pioneers (22-10), including 19 during a first half that featured three ties and 12 lead changes. But he got his third foul with 17:55 left and fourth with 8:37 to go.

“Obviously, foul trouble on Udofia was a key factor for us,” Pioneers coach Joe Scott said. “But they made the plays they had to make, they made the foul shots, and we didn’t.”

Seeking its 12th win in 13 games, Denver appeared poised for an upset as the second half wore on. It was 33-all before Marcus Byrd drilled a 3-pointer to spark a 15-6 spree that included a three-point play and a 3-pointer by Brett Olsen.

And then Maryland began its comeback with 7-foot-1 Alex Len and 6-8 James Padgett on the bench.

“We were desperate,” Turgeon said. “We couldn’t guard them. They had complete control of the game and our post guys couldn’t score against them. So we tried to spread them out, try to drive on them and get to the foul line.”

Maryland used five straight free throws to launch the decisive run. A runner by Seth Allen put the Terrapins up 51-50 with 4:09 remaining, the first time they led after halftime.

Turgeon was pressed to remember the last time he used a lineup of five guards for that long.

“I coached a JV team at Kansas where my power forward was 6-2 and sometimes he played center,” Turgeon said. “I’m sure we did it there.”

Despite the loss, Scott believed his team benefited from its two-game run in the NIT.

“The future is bright,” he said, “and this type of experience is the thing that can get you going in the direction you want to go.”

KenPom Lists DU As Favorites In WAC Tourney

Royce White

All-kenpom: Chris Udofia, Denver (kPOY); Royce O’Neal, Denver; Daniel Mullings, New Mexico State; Chase Hallam, Denver; Kyle Barone, Idaho.

It’s been a disappointing season for Joe Scott in one sense. The five-time coach of the slowest team in basketball has now gone two consecutive seasons without capturing that honor. This season it appears Jim Molinari’s Western Illinois squad is going to beat out Denver for the slowpoke crown. In other respects, it’s been a very good season for Joe Scott. His team has shredded most of its WAC opponents, and the Pioneers’ most recent win was a 78-54 humiliation of conference-leader Louisiana Tech. The Bulldogs along with New Mexico State are legitimate threats here, but DU has to be considered the favorite.

The Pioneers head into their final four games of the regular season 17-8 overall and in sole possession of second place in the WAC at 13-2.

Scott's question: How many teams are 13-1 over their past 14 games? The coach knows one of them is his own.

Scott is hopeful that the DU student body will increase its attendance at the three vital games.

"I'd like to think that will happen," Scott said. "If our students come out, it will be a great boost for our team" [read entire article].

DU Basketball Hopes To Build Program's History

The more Joe Scott learns about the University of Denver's distant basketball past, the more driven he becomes for what he wants to see in the future.

On a trip to Utah State in November — a 67-54 Denver victory — Scott discovered there's some DU history to build on. The Pioneers have the fourth-longest series on Utah State's schedule. They met for the first time in the 1922-23 season, but they have met just twice since 1978.

Then Monday, the Pioneers played their 148th game in the series with Wyoming. There's Division I men's basketball history at DU, but it needs a dusting [read entire article].
