After facing the Avalanche on Wednesday night, San Jose Sharks rookie defenseman Matt Carle will remain in Denver and serve as a special guest in Friday night's University of Denver-Michigan Tech game at Magness Arena.
.
Carle, who in April became DU's first Hobey Baker Award winner as NCAA player of the year, will make an on-ice appearance with the trophy during the first intermission of the DU game.
.
Pioneers coach George Gwozdecky and Sharks general manager Doug Wilson orchestrated Carle's visit, which prevents Carle from practicing with San Jose before the Sharks' game Saturday against the visiting Philadelphia Flyers.
.
"Doug and I have been talking on a regular basis, and he is extremely supportive of college hockey and our program," Gwozdecky said. "He and coach Ron Wilson, who played at Providence, understand the significance of great individual awards like this, and for us, it's going to be great to have Matt back here."
.
Carle's trophy has been on display at the Sharks' arena, the HP Pavilion at San Jose, next to Jonathan Cheechoo's 2005 Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy (NHL goal-scoring champion), and Joe Thornton's 2005 Hart Memorial Trophy (NHL MVP) and Art Ross Trophy (NHL scoring champion).
.
Carle, who signed with the Sharks after his junior year at DU, entered Wednesday's game at the Pepsi Center as the NHL's highest-scoring rookie defenseman with 14 points (three goals). He is a Calder Trophy candidate as NHL rookie of the year.
