ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Senior goaltender Peter Mannino (Farmington Hills, Mich.) stopped 25 shots and sophomore Brock Trotter (Brandon, Manitoba) tallied the game-winning goal as the No. 4/5 Denver Pioneers defeated No. 14 St. Cloud State, 3-2, in WCHA action tonight at National Hockey Center.
DU improves to 11-4 overall and 8-3 in the WCHA, while SCSU falls to 7-6-2, 3-5-1 with its fourth consecutive loss.
“I thought our ability to stop St. Cloud State’s power play was a key tonight,” DU head coach George Gwozdecky said. “Peter was our rock in net and we never trailed in the game.”
Trotter netted the game-winner when he batted a rebound off a shot by Tyler Bozak (Regina, Saskatchewan) from the low slot at 6:05 of the final period.
Jesse Martin (Edmonton, Alberta) staked the Pioneers to a 1-0 lead at 3:54 of the second period. Andreas Nodl tied the game at 1-1 at 1:05 of the third. Rhett Rakhshani (Huntington Beach, Calif.) gave DU a brief 2-1 lead 25 seconds later, but Garrett Roe nailed the equalizer less than two minutes later on a nifty goal from the left goal line.
St. Cloud State outshot DU 27-26, but the Pioneers went 4-for-4 on the penalty kill. DU went 0-for-1 with the man advantage. Jase Wesolsky (23 saves) took the loss for St. Cloud State.
The Pioneers aim for their first sweep since Nov. 16-17 tomorrow night at 6:07 p.m. MT.
Notes: Denver is 11-0 when allowing two goals or less this season...DU freshmen and sophomores have tallied 40 of the team’s 43 goals...DU is 11-0 when tied or leading after two periods...Mannino improves to 11-4 with a 1.68 GAA and .935 Sv%. Brock Trotter’s game-winning goal was the third of his career...Tyler Bozak has scoring points in eight of the last night games.
