University of North Dakota Coach Dave "the Bird" Hakstol said "knock off the dirty language" at a UND student forum last week. The Hakstol Glare can melt granite and he's even been known to shoot "the bird" at WCHA referees. But those day are apparently now over and a kinder gentler Bird is flying in a new direction.
"Sportsmanship" is the new buzzword around Grand Forks due to a fan almost losing his life in a parking lot altercation after a Fighting Sioux hockey game earlier in the season.
Having Dave Hakstol teach the kids about sportsmanship is like having Michael Jackson teaching at a daycare center, but hey, even Bill Belichick makes mistakes.
“He definitely commanded the room,” said UND student Austin Dhuyvetter, who attended the Forum. “He opened my eyes.”
The eye-opening wasn’t about its naughtiness but its bottom line. “Our games are now on the Fox Network, and the chants can be heard on the TV,” Dhuyvetter said. “If the games are no longer on TV, we won’t get the top recruits. And if we don’t get the top recruits, our team won’t be as good.”
Junior Samantha Dhuyvetter, Austin’s sister, agreed. “When Hakstol says it’s disrespectful, we need to tone it down. He’s a big guy in our university, and everyone respects him."
The Dhuyvetter siblings combined to produce the night’s best sign, which had defenseman Chay Genoway’s head pasted atop Superman’s body, with the words, “Up, up and Genoway.”

Just wanted to point out the Up, Up Genoway sign was at the Gopher game a month before the forum on swearing. Creativity can exists even if we swear a little. Also the incident with fighting outside the arena and the fan ending up in the hospital was not related to students in any way.
Great points and thanks for the updates.
The UND students & swearing aren't the real problem. Fan safety and abusive behavior by the locals attending the games is the bigger issue.
However, if UND students get more creative and drop less F*Bombs, that's good too.
Student sections, bands and rowdy fans are what makes college hockey great.
This would be a very boring site if it were'nt for UND. It is so obvious that all the DU alumns who regularly read this site, including the blog owner, are all SIOUX wannabees. ;)
LetsGoDU is the number three ranked Blog in North Dakota among adults who can read.
The number 1 and 2 blogs among adults who can read in North Dakota are:
1. MilkIsOurStateDrink.blogspot.com
2. HornyHungHorses.blogspot.com
To be fair, this isn't a fair representation of the state population, because only about 18 of the 300 adults in the state can read and of that number only 5 have internet access.
I'll echo DG's sentiments.
The problem isn't so much the kids cursing at games, but the truly hostile behavior of full-grown adults who should know better. The occasional student stuff is child's play compared to the haymakers thrown by drunken 25-35 year old men who think punching people is a viable solution when fans don't agree...
As long as one is not intentionally provoking someone else, no fan should be verbally threatened, let alone touched at a hockey game. Ever.
Fuck that.

Beyond writing expletives, can you offer a coherent defense of your assertion?
Remember...it was a Gopher fan that threw the puch at the Sioux fan. And EVERY team has fans we'd like to trade in.
Stabbing is a more effective solution when fans don't agree and it doesn't hurt your hand as much, or so I’m told.
To be fair there are two radically different versions of the incident that occurred in the parking lot.
I don't think that it has been established that the assailant was a "Gopher Fan."
According to one version of the events that night, he was acting as a peacemaker and a two degrees from UND.
DG,
You cannot make a rational defense that you and your four DU hockey friends are not closet SIOUX wannabees. All I see is silly jokes poked fun at ND residents. Do realize how childish sound? Get some credibility. A game of cirle-jerk would do you all some good.
I hope the trash talk from the UND side gets better -- these anon kids just aren't really putting much effort into it. It is early in the week though, and Dirty hasn't emerged from under his bridge yet.
Another SIOUX wannabee..;) Thanks for attending
Oh I forgot to add a smiley on my message -- it shows that one "haz teh internet clever".
What kinda of self-respecting Sioux fan wants DU fans to be "Sioux Wannabe's anyway"? I'm thinking you're a CC or Minnesota fan, Madame Anonymous.
:D
(my smile is more smug, since I'm a DU alum)
Sioux wannabes?
Last time I checked, DU and UND have the same number of NCAA titles (7), with the Pioneers' titles coming more recently (2005 vs 2000) and at the expense of UND in 2005.
DU also beat the Sioux the last time these teams met (2005) for a WCHA final five championship, as well as the last time the two met for in an NCAA regional (2004).
if circle jerking would give credibility, then i think that DU and their fans do not have to worry about credibility issues.
UND fans who have nothing to do but search out "UND wannabes" on the internet are more pathetic than said wannabes.
I just heard bits & pieces from the news while eating dinner that one of the NFL owners got caught on camera yesterday flipping off fans of the opponent team... and he got a major fine. I think it was like $250k
more anonymous Sioux wannabees showing up..
Puck,
With any luck, you guys won't have to wait another 30 years for another appearance in the big dance............73-04......2035, wow, I think we might be dead by then.....Honestly, I'm not sure Gwoz can get you back anytime soon.
if all of the DU fans are sioux wannabes then why are all the sioux fans reading a DU blog?
Because some Sioux fans are interested in college hockey in general and like to be knowledgeable about various teams, particularly if they play against them often. (this would be me)I read this blog pretty frequently actually, and while I roll my eyes at the commentary during DU/UND week, I find this blog to be pretty informative for the most part.
North Dakota: Where men are men -----and sheep are nervous!!
Why is it all the sioux fans have the same name, "Anonymous"? Does a picture of Dueling Banjos flash in front of you?
That picture just sums up UND hockey perfectly....tasteless, classless, and downright pathetic. The comments from UND followers just become examples to the points.
:D (Just for you Trev)
I would like to piont out that Sara actually shows some class and is not pathetic and is just a great fan for the Sioux. I like to give credit where it is due

The 73-04 appearance at the 'big dance' drought you cite is inaccurate. Denver did appear at the Frozen Four in 1986, after winning the WCHA title that year.
Granted, there were some lean years between for DU the mid 70s to the early 90s, but since Gwozdecky joined the program in 1994, the team is often competes regularly for league and national titles, as well as top level recruits as an elite program.
The facts are that DU and UND programs have been beaqting on each other for nearly 60 years, and lately, I think the intensity of the rivalry has taken on an extra dimension since Denver started beating UND in the last three important post season games where the teams have met.
2:46......congratulations. You get the golden shovel award for that load of horsesh**. You only wish your sack was 1/2 of the size of Gwoz's, homeboy.
Good come back anon 11:52 you really got him with that one.
As a UND fan would like to thank puck swami for actually talking hockey. I believe that your NC drought was from '73 to '04 and that would put you on track for another in the 2030's, but that's beside the point because it's true that DU has hand us some of our more bitter losses as of late. That’s why this is such a great rivalry and also why victory will be so sweet when we deliver the beat down this weekend. Hope to see you come tournament time, because we hate to win it all without knocking you out first.

Kahazy:
I love to talk hockey with Sioux fans, some of whom of the most knowledgable fans around.
I think the rivarly heating up in recent years has bought out increaded levels of smack talk on both sides, which makes for un-initeresting reading after a while.
I think if Cheverie and Weircioch aren't able to play this weekend, DU will be hard-pressed to stay competitive with UND. Our backup goalie, Adam Murray is only saving 83% of the shots he faces (last in the NCAA right now), which could mean a very long weekend for DU. If Cheverie does play (and plays the way he did before the injury) I think DU has a great chance to do well.
We'll need to wait and see who plays.
Kahazy........yawn. Your attempt to talk smack sounds like my 7-year old nephew. Leave the analysis to more intelligent folks, dimwit.
anon 9:13 your comeback was briliant, you single handedly refuted my so called smack talk and countered my points percisely, maybe you should have your nephew do the commenting for you.
puck swami:
i see what you mean by un-interesting commentary, i would actually visit this blog more often if it wasn't for all the personal insults and mindless drivile.
anyway, i would really like to see Chevie and Weirs in the line up this weekend for DU, and i hope Chay is a go as well for UND. they just aren't the same teams without those players. no dought the games will be great and the players that are steping up are definately worthy and fierce competitors, but we are talking about huge cogs defensively and offensively for both teams.
if Chevie's not in the net and we win both games don't get me wrong i'll still be happy, but i'll know in the back of my mind that we did not beat the best DU had to offer and it will hold little water come time for the next match up.

Sorry forgot to spell check this one should be easier to read. Feel free to delete my first post.

kahazy------mindless drivel?? take a look at your post. that's as mindless as it gets.
“As long as one is not intentionally provoking someone else, no fan should be verbally threatened, let alone touched at a hockey game. Ever.”
So it’s okay to smack them if they intentionally provoke you? What if they provoke you but it’s unintentional? Do you have to give them a warning before you smack them? What if they intend to provoke you but topple over because they are too drunk to stand?
Maybe I should have been clearer. The comment was made to allow for the reality of self defense. It means you don't get in anyone's face and threaten anyone unless that person gets in your grill first. You also wouldn't touch anyone unless you were intentionally struck by someone else first.
Clear?
Speaking of too drunk to stand -how’s it going CO14ers?
“I've had private player e-mails over the years that has ranged from supportive to nasty”
If you provoke a player by posting in a blog are his parents they allowed to smack you upside the head? Better question – will you be able to stop a pit bull with lipstick from kicking your butt after you take her child to task on USCHO?
Adam Murray's mama would make Puck Swami wet his pants.
Puck Swami has never been the same after Chris Olson’s mother slapped him silly for comments about her son’s goaltending back in ‘86. Sad to see a grown man like Swami crying like a little girl. I have to admit that Mrs. Olson seemed to have a pretty good right cross when she knocked Swami to his knees.
UND is the chippiest and dirtiest team in the WCHA. Hakstol played under coach Gaspirini and he was a dirty coach and Hakstol has taken over that philosophy. Dean Blais the old UND coach was even dissapointed in how Hakstol has run the team. Its disappointing to see.
