DU 3 - UND 2 FINAL

(above) Joe Colborne & Rhett Rakhshani celebrate a power play goal in the 2nd Period
"I thought we took two or three poor penalties (because) of lack of composure. The whole 2nd Period was the turning point of the hockey game."

-North Dakota coach Dave Hakstol

The University of Denver won an unbelievable game tonight in Magness Arena. The scoreboard read 3-2, but a disallowed goal by North Dakota that was ruled "kicked in" by the replay officials with 43 seconds left sealed the victory.

All five goals by both teams were scored on the Power Play. Patrick Wiercioch returned to action for DU and he made his limited time on the power play unit pay off handsomely.

DU trailed 2-0 after the first period, but three second period goals in less than eight minutes was the difference.

We got lucky tonight boys. That second period was a gift. I'm glad we got the sweep but I'll be the first to say that the Sioux got hosed.

Good game and weekend for DU. Congrats. DU surely took advantage whe it presented itself. No doubt the Sioux took some stupid penalties in the 2nd, but 6 power plays in a row? I can't understand why the refs seem to want to dictate outcomes of these games......I just don't get it.

Great game - had a blast watching it with my kids. Nice work DU!

Maybe Hextall should start playing this game like it's a team sport... the Sioux could have used another guy out there that wanted to win and not take stupid penalties.

I got to go turn some music on... I can still hear the fans whining!

GO DU!!!

One hell of a game. Can't comment on the final disallowed goal, as being at the game they don't show replays on the jumbotron. A well fought series, calls could have gone either way - and did for most respects.

With that, the Sioux fans I ran into tonight were very courteous. However, there is no other team in college hockey who can come out in droves like the Sioux do in Denver - it's simply amazing.

Here's to a great holiday period of hockey, with a six week break, no reason why DU shouldn't come back on top of its game as the tilt heads to Grand Forks - only wish I could be there.

Thank you to the UND fans tonight who were oustanding hockey fans... much better than last night for sure.

UND better learn how to control thier tempers and stay ouf of the penalty box, or pretty soon they'll be known in the league rankings as "FOURTH" Dakota.

Anon 11:31 - agreed. Blood needs to calm the most - he lost this game for his team.

Yep an excellent weekend of CH at Magness. The UNDies are crying on the USCHO boards that the refs threw the game which is BS. Malone, Hextal and Blood threw the game and DU took advantage of their complete lack of discipline in the second with 3 PP goals in 7 minutes.

UND ranks 4th in PM's with 21 a game and DU 32nd with 14. Tonight was 24 for UND and 16 for DU. The difference was DU solved their tough kill puzzle (had only given up 4 in 50+ chances before tonight). The refs blew the game? UND had a 6-3 for the last 47 seconds. I love the fact that we walk away with the four points. Makes up for the mess in Alaska

Even the cry babies admit the refs got the kicked goal call right.

This team needed this--I think they will build on it.

You know what... SCREW YOU North Dakota! Let's see who's who come Springtime... when the Oak Trees are blossoming in your lame-ass city AND state. Who's going to be in Michigan for the Frozen Four? Only time will tell... but tonight... this weekend....YOU SUCK! ONE word...... SCOREBOARD!

Not a big deal whatsoever. This is a building stone and we will go from there. Coach Hak talks about building blocks and that is what this game was. Congrats to DU for a job well done and we will meet again. I hope DU enjoys the bars tonight. I was there in the early '80s with many UND wins over MN & WI and nothing is better. The refs don't matter and it is all on us. PRIDE! BLOOD #24 IS MY HERO!

I can't describe how great it feels to send home that team I describe as "The Green Skid-mark inside the underwear of the WCHA" without a point. Truly epic and a huge confidence booster for this team.

Chevy doesn't look like he's been gone for that long and is continuing where he left off. It's great to have our star goalie back in net. As for the rest of the team great effort. Forecheck, backcheck, taking the body, blocking passes and shots... this team did everything. In fact I say this is the first time this year they have played complete games back to back. Well done Denver.

I don't know why the refs are so in question tonight. Last night they didn't do well and everyone wanted them to be very strict. Tonight they were... every time DU did something stupid either during or after the play we got penalized. Every time UND did something stupid they were penalized. You wanted a strict game and you got it. That goes for both sides and I thought it was well officiated on those regards. As for the disallowed goal... I can't really question. *Thanks a lot WCHA for not allowing replay.* I'm guessing the net was moved. That's all I know.

You just know though when we go up to that God Forsaken land later this season they will be looking for a bloodbath. Seems like they always do their dirty work when they are at home. Till then they can walk their trail of tears back to North Dakota and stay the hell out of our house.

Chambers' Denver Post article:

"Compared to Friday's chippy series opener that featured continuous after-the-whistle shenanigans, it was as if referees Scott Bokal and Brian Thul changed the rules.

In reality, it was just a Western Collegiate Hockey Association crackdown, with commissioner Bruce McLeod overseeing things from the press box."

Kiszla gave us a column too.

Great weekend for the Pios. To get a sweep against a tough Sioux team is awesome. Both games were intense, hard fought, and very competitive. This rivalry continues to shine.

DU had a lousy start last night. They looked a bit flat and sluggish, and the Sioux were easily the better team in the first period. However, once the Pios found their legs they really came on in the 2nd and had some great sequences. They sure had some nice looks on the power play. I thought the Sioux looked tired at times in the 3rd. Nevertheless, it was another frantic finish.

The refs seemed to be extremely concerned with maintaining order, and DU was the more composed team as the game wore on. The Sioux looked frustrated at times and did take some dumb penalties. That said, I can understand why Sioux fans are pissed about the officiating. 6 penalties in a row against one team makes you scratch your head a bit.

Another high quality opponent on tap: St. Cloud.

Had to go to the Grand Forks blog to find out that ND has not been swept in 35 MONTHS!! Go Pioneers!!

Now Gwoz has his hands full keeping the team "up" for St. Cloud.

Maybe, Western Collegiate Hockey Association commissioner Bruce McLeod should be overseeing things from the press box in North Dakota when these two teams meet again so there isn't any crap in Nodak Land and the refs get a handle on the games from the start. Just a thought the league should think about.

A comment on the new opening player introduction video they have.... that music sucks (for that application). The video is pretty neat; but the audio needs to be changed. Make it loud, pumping, exciting. Then again, with a great team on the ice... who needs a video to get you pumped?

Congratulations to DU, heck of a series. Good to see that there are some classy DU posters on here that realize that UND and DU are two very good hockey teams (and pretty equal at this point in the season). Both of the games this weekend could have gone either way.

To the other DU posters like MagnessMan & Anon @ 12:49...time to grow up gents. You won, I'm not sure why you feel the need to try to stir the pot. I love the reasoning that MM gives for the refs not "blowing the game": UND had a 6-3 for the last 47 seconds. Wow, 47 whole seconds? DU had 19min worth of PP, almost an entire period's worth. :D

Regardless, they took advantage with what the refs gave them, and that's what good teams will do. See you in Jan DU, hope we can repay the favor.

Until then, good luck. You're in the driver's seat for the WCHA.

Jordan said...

I understand your frustrations, but this is a DU blog, so it's not exactly "stirring the pot" to be excited about the sweep. Given the prevalence of UND fans on here, it's pretty ridiculous to think that this post wouldn't be rampant with Sioux fans had the result been opposite....

It’s better than being "The Red Skid-mark inside the underwear of the WCHA".

I hope that McLeod is at the games to that way he can see that DU is just a bunch of cheap hacks in a different color sweater.

Welcome to the game of hockey "fans"

“6 penalties in a row against one team makes you scratch your head a bit.”

There should have been 8? : )

You’re not saying that after 5 stupid penalties the Ref should look the other way are you? The Refs called the penalties that UND made. Both teams were warned what the Refs were going to be looking for during the 2nd game. UND must not have listened.

Maybe you’re asking why the Hak didn’t get his kids under control. His team is undisciplined, simple as that.

Wow, what a great series! These were two of the best hockey games I’ve seen in a long time. A sweep of the Sioux – GLORIOUS!

A big thank you to all the Sioux fans that made the trip. You really made the game better. I’ve haven’t seen the DU crowd so boisterous in years. Your arrogance before the game made rubbing your nose it all the more fun.
