DU 2 - North Dakota 0 FINAL

(above) Chevy recorded his second shutout of the season against North Dakota

The University of Denver scored two goals in the first 3:18 seconds of the game and then held on for a shutout victory over the University of North Dakota. Joe Colborne & Tyler Ruegsegger scored a couple of nice goals for the Pioneers.

Marc Cheverie was the story of the game coming up with big save after save.

North Dakota had a goal disallowed early in the third period, Corban Knight was called for interference just after Carter Rowney beat Cheverie. Officials waved off the goal, accusing Knight of taking down DU defenseman Patrick Wiercioch. Needless to say Sioux Nation will be crying about it on their way back to the Trailer Park tonight.

TV INFO: Saturday's game against North Dakota will be available on DirecTV 623 and Fox College Sports-Atlantic. The game will not be telecast on Fox Sports-Rocky Mountain. For those in Denver, with Comcast Digital Receivers: Saturday's game is on 413 (FCS-Atlantic). You can order the "Sports Pack" from Comcast for $4.99 per month. Anyone hear anything on Martin yet? Get well soon play-making-Jessie!

Martin very doubtful for tomorrow and may be out next weekend with an upper body injury that will heal according to Gwoz.

A DU fan in ND told me that two UND fans presented Gwoz with a pair of non-slip shoes in case he wanted to walk on the ice. Gwoz thanked them.

Any truth to the rumor posted earlier of a dustup pregame when the DU team bus arrived at the barena?

Brockwell not only took THREE penelties they were all careless. No need for any of the three. Our penalty kill was outstanding. Chevie for the hobey Bakert

Chevy saved our ass!

Chevy was good but the PK saved our azzes. Sioux had 9 PPs to Denvers 5, and a 5 on 3 for almost a full two minutes and could not score.

Gotcha, D ... Ha, he should've sung at the ND game, man that guy who sang the anthem for them was not ... well ... not good ... I admire anyone who does that, it must be hard, but man .. just sayin'

A gutty road win over a very determined opponent. You could tell that DU learned a few things from their Madison experience last weekend.

Now the power play looks like crap. It seems to flow better with Donovan & Wiercioch back on the blueline together.

Chevy was rock solid, DU finally had a quick start, and that was all they needed. It was nice to see the Pios not give up that lead, although UND sure as hell tried. The Sioux were very impressive.

Does anyone know the last time DU went 4-0 vs UND in the regular season?

The Sioux shouldn't be upset about the waved off goal. They had 9 power plays to Denver's 5, including a 5 on 3 for almost the full two minutes. They had plenty of chances to win the game, but Chevy stood tall in the nets.

Expect to see a very physical Sioux team tomorrow. DU will need to play with discipline.

If you want to really call out who "saved DU's ass," check out Matt Donovan and Brandon Vossberg. Both had HUGE blocks. Vossber's was on the goal line, point blank. He just went down and blocked the shot with his chest, then while on the ground, swatted the puck out of the crease and behind the net.

That's damn fine defense.

puck Swami said...

The waved off goal was never goalie interference. The Sioux TV announcers got it wrong. Knight was called for interfering with a DU defenseman before the goal was scored, not interfering with Chevy, so it wasn't reviewable.

I was thinking exactly what Swami said towards the end of the game. I was actually ok with taking so many penalties as long as we won so it would even out the "terrible" officiating that "gave DU the wins" during the last series. If it was a 1 goal game and they had one waved off, it's one thing, but when you go 0 for 9 on the power play you don't have much of a case.

Vossberg's play was probably the smartest thing he's done in a DU jersey, and Chevy stoned the breakaways. And DU played with some jump in their step. When was the last time we had a quick start?

Jordan said...

Ah, that would explain it. Thanks Swami.

Great win! What do we say... "He's not a Ford but a Chevy!" Problem tonight though, too many penalties taken and the 2nd period where we were so bad. We can't do that again and hope Chevy can block them all.

As for the fight in the parking lot. I was told by a NCAA ref I know and later it was mentioned on the Fan.

To Puck Swami:

Ok I thought it was weird they would call goalie interferance.

Amy said...

Great win by DU but way TOO many penalties. ND will be coming out with even greater determination tomorrow and DU has to be ready.

@DG
I had to laugh when they thought they saw you on TV. My mom said the exact same thing and I had to tell her it wasn't you.

DU was very fortunate tonight. We should have blown them out after scoring 2 quick goals but couldn't. This is not the typical Susie team that we normally face - full of piss and vinegar. This Susie team is a bit soft. Malone was the only one out there with any fire in his belly. DU has shown a disconcerting pattern this season of coming out strong, building a lead, and then sitting back and getting into a defensive shell putting everything on the shoulder of the goalie. You can only get away with that for so long. Won't work against the better teams (witness Wisc.).

The last time DU went 4-0-0 against North Dakota was the last National Championship year 2004-05. DU won the two regular season meetings, the WCHA Final 5 semi-final and the National Championship game.

The last time DU went 4-0-0 against North Dakota in the regular season was in 1992-93 under Frank Serratore.

A season sweep would be sweet tonight. Lets hope the boyz pull it off.

The win & shut out were cool; but I was even happier with the intensity of the first 10 minutes. Great job. Also I took note that there weren't too many after-whistle scrums; except for that big one. When they played each other in Colorado, the Friday night game was a friggin war, and the refs let it all go.... and the Saturday game was more disciplined. Maybe tonight will be the ugly ?? Who knows. Great W for DU though

I don't like the "feared to be a serious" injury report from Chambers on Jessie Martin. Did anyone see what happened? I thought Gwoz said he'd be out 1-3 games?

What you saw last night is pretty much how the year has gone for the Sioux. A bunch of effort and no goals or very little goals. It has been a strange year in that regards. Cheverie is very good though and anything is possible for DU this year. I've become convinced they have a shot at the title. Whoever made the comment on the National Anthem singer is correct. Something went totally wrong there, sound system failed, he was not standing in the normal spot for the camera which is right by the National Guard. The whole night was off, starting with the Anthem. Go Sioux!

Why wasn't Ryder in the lineup last night?? He's our most physical player. Brookwell was terrible.

Any more details or verification of this alledged parking lot scrap?

Nice dive by Weircioch.....what a joke.

Sioux power play going 0-9 in you own building is a joke.

Just finished watching the whole game. Du was outplayed and out-worked the entire game. I hope you DU fans realize that Chevy will not bail you out of every game. Your season will flame-out early, again.

Scoreboard!!

You know I guess math is not a required class at ND, they have trouble reading the score. They do know how to complain about everything but their inability to score.

Pios sweep and Dirty and Hextall Dirty Sanchez each other!

looks like that goon hockey isn't working for ND. Wow, does this mean they have to learn to play and score on power plays?

Ben Blood with a massive cheap head shot to Jessie Martin to end the first. With about 2 minutes to go, Martin clears the puck from the defensive zone boards and literally 4 seconds after the play Blood drives an elbow into Martins head. These guys can't handle the 0-fer the Pioneers are handing them. Home ice is slipping away quickly too. Bastards.

According to Mike Chambers, Jesse Martin is officially out 2-4 weeks, big blow up the middle. Salazar better step up now that he's back in the lineup.

Anon 10:25,

I was very surprised as well that Ryder did not play last night. Seems awfully strange to leave the most physical player out of the lineup vs a tough hard nosed team like UND. I think Paul Philips has done a credible job as a first year player, but I certainly wouldn't put him above Ryder.

Brookwell had a lousy game, for sure. I hate to throw a guy under the bus, especially a senior, but he seems to have regressed this year and lost some confidence.
