Cops & Paramedics Assist UND Hockey Freshmen

(above) The Grand Forks Herald provided details of intoxicated Freshman hockey players carried to their dorm rooms by teammates and left unconscious until rescued by police and paramedics
From: Grand Forks Herald
by Stephan J Lee

The frantic phone call to University of North Dakota police earlier this month by a dormitory RA that resulted in four UND freshman hockey players cited for underage drinking and seven other players suspended, came in as a request for medical assistance.

The responding officer, Cheryl Sevigny, reported that paramedics suggested two of the freshmen be watched overnight and took another to the emergency room on suspicion of alcohol poisoning.

On Friday, Grand Forks County prosecutors charged the four freshmen players with underage drinking, a Class B misdemeanor. They are Jordan Schmaltz, 18; Bryn Chyzyk, 19; Zane Gothberg, 20; and Drake Caggiula, 18 [read entire article].

This is a serious matter. To post a silly cartoon at the top is way too flip and childish. Kindly grow up.

What a bunch of lightweights ...these pussies probably only had like 3 wine coolers or something. Lol.

Freshmen nonetheless. They've already proven them selves worthy of the Fighting Sioux. Good job boys, starting off right.

Chuck, don't be such a hypocrite. I just clicked on the link to your website and you have a cartoon picture linked to the article as well. Kindly go back to your gopher hole.

Seriously....is this all you talk about. Unreal. DG...I seriously can't wait until one DU player slips up. I can't F-ing wait. Your fat ass is seriously sitting up all night searching for cartoons on the web. I am surprised you had enough time over night to take a break from the porn, to look all this stuff up. Get your dick out of your hand, and focus on DU hockey.Get a life, loser!

Yeah, UND players screwed up in the preseason but we will F-ing pound DU this year. Seriously, pound DU.

DG, I'd say come up to GF in the Dec, but it would probably be a little steep since the airline would most likely make you purchase two tickets.

You know I love the rhetoric of the UND drones. Rather than addressing the problem, they lash out at everyone else.

I have a couple of suggestions:

1.) If you don't like reading the truth, don't visit this blog.

2.) Admit that you have a systemic problem with discipline.

3.) It might be time to look at the leadership (i.e. Hakstol)and see if they are part of the problem.

4.) DU, like most progams, has had problems. The difference is that they were dealt with quickly and the punishment was appropriate.

5.) Stop with the Sophomoric name calling. You don't have to agree, but at least be civil. All is does is make you look petty.

No one at DU is jealous of North Dakota, trust me. We're making fun of you here because your program, while very good on the ice, is simply brutal off the ice.

The UND hockey program obviously has a long culture of alcohol abuse and run-ins with law enforcement that is not only a a huge stain on your program, but is borderline tragic. Your players can play hockey but they lack character...And your coaches can't (or won't) change that element of the culture, either.

You can have your $100 million palace on the prairie built by an anti-semite, your long police rap sheet, your cave-man fan base and a school that is ranked 170th academically in US News. You can have your cold, windswept small prairie city with little else to do but drink and play/watch hockey.

We'll take our top 85 school, seven NCAA titles, our many years of leading the WCHA in academic achievement, our lack of rap sheet, and our world class place to live.

Not sure who 'Chuck' is, but if you are referring to HockeyBias.com and the article referenced above that describes the severity of the situation, this is simply not true.

@ Miller

Don't give me the civil BS. Your an F-ing hack. That's about as civil of a post I have ever seen you write. You spend most your time on here bashing UND and GF with BS statements. So don't give us the civil lecture. The fact of the matter is that UND has had issues to start the year. To claim this board and their BS cartoons is some how civil is unreal. If you post about UND, we will all be over here to dominate your blog. It's worked.

Another poll came out today.....where's DU rank? Who knows. This is the anti UND board, not the DU board. These posts are designed for us to come over, so we will do just that. Don't bash UND, and we won't come over.

Come on old balls. Get back to playing scrable with your friends in the retirement home.

DU ranked 85th and you have to pay $38k a year in tuition. Sounds like a great deal!!

i would comment on your fans, but you besides the losers on this board you don't have any. I have been to Magness many times and have empty student sections time and time again.

World class place? The news states otherwise.

The University of Denver was just ranked 13th on US News & World Report's list of 16 “Up-and-Comers,” as selected by college presidents and admissions deans on their rankings surveys.

Other schools on the list include the University of Southern California, Clemson University, Tulane University and the University of San Diego.

$38k per year. Not saying DU is a bad school. It's a great school. your lucky you have all those rich CA kids come and pay your tuition. But at $38k per year, or $152k over four years, it's a tough nut to pay off. A $150k student loan with a theology degree (would you like fries with that), is a tough one.

does Hakstol have to blow into the breathalyzer too?

DG, apparently it's more important to lay awake at night worrying about under-age drinking...ie, 2:29am post about UND... then to post news that might interest a legitimate DU fan.

You legion of low-hockey IQ'ers might even understand that the pre-season WCHA media poll is credible news.

DU number 3, Laleggia and Brittian pre-season first team....uscho

Get a life.

DU ranks in the top quarter of college hockey attendence at about 5300 fans per game, or about 89% of capacity.

That's about the same as Michigan, BU and UNH.

We do just fine, considering school size (5K undergrad), ticket price (2nd highest nationally) tough market competition (8 pro teams, 4 larger colleges within an hour) and private status.

Anonymous said...

The funny thing is, I think some of the fighting whioux? hockey team has been posting in this comment section. They haven't yet sobered up.

Anonymous said...

considering this, considering that....blah blah blah.

Again...if you want UND fans to go away, talk about your team. I can tell you....that's not a topic we care about.

Anonymous said...

Whats your revenue look like? sad to think that UND will have to fund the NCHC.

5BWest said...

I think the cartoon is appropriate.

I am disappointed that our new conference, the NCHC, will include UND. Adding top tier schools like University of Miami is a big plus but having UND in the same conference is like having your stupid, drunk uncle over for Christmas eve. I think the bigger question to ask is, "Has UND lost institutional control?" and should the NCAA or WCHA assign the death penalty or suspend their program for a few years? Keeping a few freshman out for gimmie games doesn't cut it. Clearly they are out of control and need a wake-up call. Next year, the NCHC should seriously consider if they want UND, and their host of problems as part of their new conference. In other words, does the money out-weigh the on-ice violence, academic shortfalls, and off-ice antics. All kidding aside - shut 'em down!

Anonymous said...

Few things are better than listening to insecure Sioux fans whine and bellyache.

Anonymous said...

Well UND's "lack of institutional control" started long ago according to you......SO Why did UND and DU basically collaborate and form the NCHC? Sorry Timmy, without UND there is no NCHC. Assign the death penalty for drinking, really?? Your a loser. Without UND, DG wouldn't have anything to do. I guess he would have more time to maybe hit the treadmill.

On-ice violence....You a@@holes seem to forget about DU's cheap shot against Robbie Bina. That pretty much started all the bad blood between these two teams. See...that one was an illegal hit. Nice selective memory Timmy.

Anonymous said...

Look at the revenues bro. There is no NCHC, without UND. You may not like us, but you need us.

A few freshmen out for gimmie games? All our captains are included, tubby.

old pio said...

While DU fans are enjoying the schadenfreude and UND fans are riffling through faded putdowns, we shouldn't lose sight of the fact that at least one young man on that hockey team appears to have a serious, potentially life threatening problem. Binge drinkers can be alcoholics, too. And the "he only drinks on weekends" excuse is just a rationalization. Drinking to the point of requiring medical intervention is no laughing matter. Let's hope the kids involved here learn their lesson. And if they need it, get help.

Anonymous said...

DU generates $2-3 million a year in hockey revenue and probably at least $1 million in hockey profit, depending on how you slice and dice the money.

That said, DU also spends $25 million a year on its D-I sports program, probably 12-15 million of that coming in out-of-pocket costs and another 12 million in scholarships, which are soft dollar costs (Athletic Dept purchased from the University).

Hockey can more than pay for itself, but not the whole dept.

Anonymous said...

I don't care what anybody says. UND's hockey revenue contribution would still pale in comparison to what a sponsorship deal with Anheiser-Busch would rake in..... just sayin. Put Bud Light Lime on the Sioux's left arms of thier jerseys!! This is a DU blog. Yes we pounce on competitors newsworthy and gossipy items here. Especially the Sioux and CC. We've always done it and we always will.

You want us to staop doing it? Stop sucking, stop getting into trouble, and win more NCAA Hockey Championships than Denver!!!

Your fancy arena.... smells like a bar. Y'all got 7 flags just like we do... so until there's 8.... shut up and take it.

5BWest said...

I think the NCHC would survive.

As for UND, a strong argument can be made for making collegiate players 'professionals' and pay them to play. Honestly, UND could be the first college program to exit collegiate hockey and join the AHL or CHL. I think they would be competitive, fairly paid to play, they would still pack their 'barn' and their fans obviously relish the opportunity to develop professionals. Also, academics would not detract from their goal to play professionally.

..and I think the NCHC could figure out a way to get by:)

Anonymous said...

Can you please post something about DU for once? I come to this blog to hear about Pioneer hockey, if I wanted to hear about UND I would go to their blog, heck if I wanted to hear about DU I would go to their blog, you should take some lessons from Schlossman, he is by far the best in the business.

Anonymous said...

DG is a fucking hack. Plain and simple.

Anonymous said...

When there is nothing positive to say about DU, time must be spent tearing down other programs in an attempt to make the Pie's seem good by comparison. Lame...as usual.

The rap sheet says it all.

19 Arrests/Citations since 2005? On one team? Really? Holy alcohol problems, Batman.

3 reasons - Character, Character, Character.

1. UND athletes have little character, since they don't seem to learn from their teammates' mistakes and they obviously don't listen to the coaches.

2. UND coaches have little character. They recruit party animals and just hand out little one game suspensions for offenses and expect things to change. Players see little consequences for their actions - they keep drinking and getting arrested/cited and the rap sheet proves they have little control over their program.

3. UND Administration has little character. They keep employing the same coach after years and years of the same alcohol infractions. The message they send is that winning is more important than character. They have no institutional control.

The rap sheet says it all...

Anonymous said...

Wait until some UND player dies from alcohol poisoning. Then the lawsuit will come down on them like a thunderbolt. And the prosecution will hold up the list of 19+ UND alcohol arrests since 2005. And he will say "What we have here is a failure to communicate!"

And UND will need to write a check for millions...Maybe that's the only way they change their ways...

5BWest said...

Excellent point...they have lost 'institutional control'. I cannot believe there are not severe penalties being handed out to the PROGRAM, not just the players. Probation for their program at minimum and they should be on the death watch.

dggoddard said...

UND has done a pretty good job in this instance of coming down hard on the players. Its not going to be fun sitting through the alcohol awareness classes and it sounds like its "zero tolerance" from this point on.

It wasn't a hazing incident, so no need for the NCAA to get involved.

Lesson learned and time to move on.

You do realize that DU contacted UND first about the new conference right?

5BWest said...

The fact that DU 'contacted' UND may be true but that was before the recent rash of problems at UND. There is no doubt that they have a strong program by any measure. Still, any objective person would have to say that they currently have some very large problems. I think we both schools have the same goals but different ways to get there.

Eric J. Burton said...

timt89 if you think that DU is immune from this issue and that DU's athletes aren't getting into trouble you're delusional as well.

Yeah most people get a chuckle out of DG's posts, I am sure he realizes that your team is just one incident away from the same thing happening there as well.

College aged adults drink alcohol and UND isn't the only school that this stuff happens at...

Anonymous said...

@ Goon

From the story, it appears that underage kids are drinking alcohol at ND. When the cops and paramedics have to respond it seems like a pretty big problem. Do you really want these kids growing up fat, drunk and stupid? Their only job opportunities would be as an AZ girls softball announcer, Kinko’s manager or widget salesman.

I don't know anyone that wants this stuff to happen but when you have people making clueless comments like "

I don't think said poster realizes that there is no NCHC without UND because the DU's first call to form the NCHC was DU to UND.

Could be worse. The only option is to work at a pawn shop with Randy May or sell scooters for Mark Rycroft.

PS --- --- didn’t get the job announcing the girls softball games in AZ either. Just another job he has stories about not getting. I’m thinking that his drinking is the reason he never got those jobs. Either that or the interviewers couldn’t drink enough to listen to him drone on.
