DU 2 - Cornell 1 FINAL

The University of Denver used a third period goal by Larkin Jacobson to sweep Cornell University on Saturday night at Magness Arena.  It was Jacobson's first collegiate goal in a season and a half at DU.

Jacobson [6'1 215 lbs.] had been used primarily as a checking forward at DU, but his first goal turned out to be huge.  He is also the step-son of NHL Player Ruslan Fedontenko.

Cornell scored in the first minute and then DU goaltender Juho Olkinuora held them scoreless for the remainder of the game.

Daniel Doremus opened the scoring for DU with just 45 seconds remaining in the first period.

DU remained at #9 in the Pairwise Rankings and will play WCHA leading Nebraska-Omaha next weekend at Magness Arena.

Terrific sweep of a very good club. I doubt DU will play a more physical team from here on out. "Juicy" was spectacular again. Is he the starter from now on? Jacobson out of the dog house and on to the score sheet. Bravo. Larraza continues to impress.

I sit right behind the benches; and the debacle at the end of the game was a joke. Too bad Cornell lost their composure; kind of makes them look like retards and sore losers. My wife did point out that the Captains of both teams did shake hands though. And as I told her, I'm glad Paul could shake with the right hand and hold the broom in the left hand. lol Great, great goaltending on both ends this weekend, IMHO. Games like these make me not miss the NHL too badly

How sad there was no postgame handshake, though. In my 45 years watching college hockey, I have never seen teams leave the ice with no handshake. Sad.

Cornell wouldnt leave the ice at the end of the game, even though refs were telling them to. Guess they wanted to get their asses handed to them for the third time this weekend. What a poor display that was from them. I have never seen anything like that before at a DU game.

Wow, I just read the Cornell coach's whining comments on the uscho recap of the game. What an utter toolbox. His team couldn't goon their way past Denver, then he blames the refs, gwozdecky, and the wcha for his troubles. What a classless fool.

Here's the video of the Cornell coach from uscho.com http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aHZkK788Z94&feature=player_embedded

"I won't come back to the WCHA again." - Taking his puck and going home! Classy!

Great Sweep by the Pios. Great to see Juho get that nod and shake off that early goal.

Can't seem to find the video, can you do a "clickable" link so we can watch it?

I can't believe that coach, what an absolute tool. Instead of congratulating the other team, he blamed the officiating. There have been many times Gwoz has been upset with the calls, but he always stops short of blaming the outcome of the game on the officials.

Hey, don't come back to the WCHA Homer.

Classless, absolutely classless.

There has been another occasion that I remember, where the handshake was "waived off" - and I'm pretty sure it was at DU. Was it against UAA maybe? I think it was the time when Tyler Ruegsegger got into a fight at the buzzer. Maybe a playoff game. Tell you what Cornell; you got a deal - DON'T come back to the WCHA; come to the NCHC next season so we can sweep your ass AGAIN!

You are correct, it was against UAA.

According to the Denver Post, the officials may have prohibited the handshake line at the end of the game.

Cornell coach at the end of the game admitted on the video that a Cornell player told Gwozdecky, "you're part of the problem."

Obviously said in the heat of battle, but its not appropriate for players to chid the opponent coaching staff.

If thats the way it went down, it wasn't "obscene language," but it was clearly poor sportsmanship. So either way its a wash.

So Gwoz is "part of the problem" eh? What part would that be? The part where he recruits better players? The part where he coaches them better once they're here? The part where he manages the game better? The part where he finally get's into Jacobson's head? The part where DU takes two nights of gooning and still wins both games? That Ivy League punk's got some 'splainin to do.

I sent an email to the athletic director about the behavior of their athletes this morning and got a reply telling me they were sorry that I was upset and that they are looking into the situation. At least I got a response and even if they aren't doing anything, they know people are upset. I've said what I needed to say about Cornell, onward to face Nebraska-Omaha!

Atta girl!

You'd think that a world class institution like Cornell would behave a little better.

But props to the coach and AD for responding in both instances.

At the end of the day, Cornell scored two goals this weekend, that's probably the root of the frustration.
