Gopher Hockey Player Cited For DUI On Moped

(above) Blue Chip Freshman recruit Gabe Guertler was busted for driving his moped under the influence
Gophers men’s hockey coach Don Lucia suspended incoming freshman Gabe Guertler on Sunday for violating team rules.

The indefinite suspension comes before official team workouts have begun but will last at least until November. Guertler’s status will be re-evaluated then

Hennepin County public records show that Guertler was arrested early Saturday morning by the University of Minnesota Police Department and charged with drunken driving.

He was released later that morning. He is scheduled to make a court appearance on Oct. 11. He faces up to 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine. A university representative confirmed that Guertler was driving a moped when he was pulled over.

Bad Boyz: Notre Dame Hockey Player Arrested

From: USCHO.com

Notre Dame junior defenseman Jared Beers has been suspended from the team indefinitely due to an off-campus incident that occurred on Sunday, Feb. 3.

According to the South Bend Tribune, the 22-year-old Beers was booked in the St. Joseph County Jail early Monday on suspicion of battery, trespass, resisting law enforcement, disorderly conduct and public intoxication.

Allegedly, the female manager of Brothers Bar and Grill told Beers to leave the bar after he tried to take beer from other patrons. Beers reportedly refused to leave, punched the manager in the face and then stepped on her head, face and neck when she fell to the ground and also pulled her ponytail.

During the incident, Beers left his wallet at the scene and responding officers called him to tell him they located his wallet. Once he arrived at the police station to retrieve his wallet, he was arrested.

“The university is aware of this incident and is confident that it will be handled in a prompt and professional manner through the criminal justice system,” Notre Dame spokesman Dennis Brown said in a statement.

Bad Boyz Alum Gets Arrested Again

(above) Notre Dame alum Rick Sheahan has some explaining to do
Notre Dame alum Riley Sheahan, a prospect for the Detroit Red Wings' organization, faces a "super-drunk" charge after his arrest for drunken driving in Grand Rapids, Mich

The 20-year-old player was pulled over by police on Oct. 29 after driving down the wrong side of the road clad in a purple Teletubbies costume.

According to a police report, Sheahan also blew a .30 at the police station after his arrest, almost four times the legal limit, and almost twice the limit needed to add a "super-drunk" charge to his current charge of driving under the influence.

Sheahan has also been charged with providing false information to authorities. The hockey player was carrying the Michigan driver's license of 23-year-old Brendan Smith, his Griffins teammate and fellow Detroit Red Wings prospect, when he was arrested in downtown Grand Rapids. Sheahan was born in St. Catherines, Ontario. As a Canadian citizen, Sheahan could possibly face deportation.

Sheahan was drafted #21 overall by the team in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft and played three years of collegiate hockey at the University of Notre Dame.

This isn't Sheahan's first time on the BadBoyz List. He was arrested after a police officer saw him, standing in the bed of a moving pickup truck about during his Freshman season at Notre Dame.  During the incident his teammate Kyle Palmieri attempted to run away from an officer, which led to a struggle between the two that included the freshman hockey player grabbing at the officer’s Taser.

Bad Boyz: WCHA Ref Arrested In Alaska

From: Anchorage Daily News
by

Peter Friesema, a WCHA referee who officiated UAA games over the weekend alongside referee WCHA Butch Mousseaux, was checking in at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport with a traveling companion late Saturday night. He pointed out that the Alaska Airlines ticket agent had put his sticker on his friend's luggage.

The agent, Courtney Grant, said it didn't matter since they were both traveling to the same destination. At any rate, the bags were already headed along the conveyor belt to the sorting area below.

What Friesema said next temporarily shut down the airport, forced hundreds of passengers into the cold night air, caused many to miss connections, and landed him in jail.

"But my friend's bag has a bomb in it," the agent remembers him saying, according to a charging document. He recounted it to authorities slightly differently, more to the effect of "what if my friend's bag has a bomb in it?"

Either way, his comment was "perhaps an effort to be funny or flirtacious," Assistant District Attorney Adam Alexander said Sunday before Friesema made a court appearance.

Friesema, 44, may have been joking but no one in the airline business is amused by off-hand comments about bombs.

Just after midnight, early on Sunday morning, officials locked down the main terminal at the international airport, with airport police telling people as they evacuated the building that there had been a "security breach."

Chilled passengers, many of them in summer clothes from their warm departure cities, huddled in doorways to keep warm.

Friesema had already cleared security; police found him in the Alaska Airlines boardroom. The FBI interviewed him, as well as the ticket agent, and determined the threat was not credible, Parrott said.

Friesema is charged with disorderly conduct, a misdemeanor. The FBI and state authorities are still evaluating whether to bring additional charges. Airport police had referred charges of both disorderly conduct and making terroristic threats, a felony, which can apply if a person makes a false report that causes evacuation of a building or public place.

At jail court on Sunday afternoon, Friesema wore a yellow jailhouse uniform. His hands were shackled in front of him. His silvery hair was neatly cut. He looked worried and spoke so softly the magistrate, Catherine Rogers, had to ask him to speak up.

He pleaded not guilty. He said he makes about $50,000 a year.

Rogers ordered him to stay in Alaska and lowered his bail from $5,000 -- set when the terroristic threat charge was pending -- to $1,500.

"I find you to be a flight risk," Rogers said, alluding to the fact Friesema lives in Colorado. "You need to have this resolved."

She set his next court hearing for Nov. 26.

"If I have to stay in Alaska, I'll lose my job, my career," he told her.

Friesema didn't say in court what he does for a living, but he's listed on the website of the Central Hockey League, a mid-level professional league, as a referee. He's also a referee with the Western Collegiate Hockey Association and has been working games in Alaska for years. On Friday and Saturday, he officiated at UAA's Kendall Hockey Classic at Sullivan Arena. He also appears to have aviation experience. He says on his Facebook page that he went to flight school in Florida and studied aviation management, as well as criminal justice, at Minnesota State University.

Maybe a half dozen flights involving hundreds of passengers were affected, Parrott said. Some planes arriving early Sunday pulled up at the North Terminal or their passengers were directed to go there, and other planes scheduled to take off around 1 a.m. departed late, causing passengers to miss connections in other cities. A number of airlines were affected, including Alaska, Delta, U.S. Airways and United, he said.

The airport is reviewing its procedures in light of the incident, Parrott said.

The frantic phone call to University of North Dakota police earlier this month by a dormitory RA that resulted in four UND freshman hockey players cited for underage drinking and seven other players suspended, came in as a request for medical assistance.

The responding officer, Cheryl Sevigny, reported that paramedics suggested two of the freshmen be watched overnight and took another to the emergency room on suspicion of alcohol poisoning.

On Friday, Grand Forks County prosecutors charged the four freshmen players with underage drinking, a Class B misdemeanor. They are Jordan Schmaltz, 18; Bryn Chyzyk, 19; Zane Gothberg, 20; and Drake Caggiula, 18 [read entire article].

UND Party Leads To More Bad Boyz Sanctions

From: Grand Forks Herald
by Stephen J. Lee and Brad Schlossman

The University of North Dakota announced more suspensions for men’s hockey players stemming from a Sept. 15 team party, while a Grand Forks prosecutor said four additional players will be named Monday to face charges for underage drinking.

Sophomores Connor Gaarder, Andrew Panzarella and Stephane Pattyn — all of whom are at least 21 years old — have been suspended for UND’s Oct. 20 regular-season game against Alaska Fairbanks, the team’s second game of the season.

Earlier in the week, the school announced captains Andrew MacWilliam, Corban Knight, Danny Kristo and Carter Rowney — all of whom are also at least 21 — would sit out the season-opener on Oct. 19 against Alaska Anchorage.

UND also announced an additional one-game suspensions to Kristo and sophomore forward Brendan O’Donnell for violating athletic department policy unrelated to the team party, meaning Kristo will sit out the entire opening weekend. O’Donnell will miss UND’s game on Oct. 19 against Anchorage.

Hakstol Fed Up With UND's Bad Boyz Antics

From: USCHO.com

Ruh Roh.  The University of North Dakota party hockey team has finally gone too far and this time the head coach, the athletic department and the university have had enough of the antics.   A blowout party on September 15th must have been a doozy, because the team captain and assistants took the brunt of the repercussions.  In addition:
  • UND's Athletics Department issued "team probation" under which any further violations by a team member could result in immediate reduction of scholarship, suspension from competition, or expulsion from the program.
  • The implementation of a mandatory team community service program
  • Weekly team alcohol education programming
  • Senior captain Andrew MacWilliam and assistant captains Corban Knight, Danny Kristo and Carter Rowney have been suspended for the opening game of the 2012-13 regular season.
The suspensions are a result of a team party on Saturday, Sept. 15, according to a school-issued news release. --- “The behavior in this situation was unacceptable,” North Dakota athletic director Brian Faison said in a statement. “Measures taken by the athletics department do not preclude possible additional measures by the department, or actions by the university or local and state authorities.”

“Recent actions by our team are not a good representation of our place as role models within our community,” added North Dakota coach Dave Hakstol. “We have young men of high character in our locker room, but our players, and in particular our leaders, must be accountable for their actions.”

In addition to the suspension of the team captains, Faison announced several additional team disciplinary measures including, but not limited to, athletics department-issued team probation under which any further violations by a team member could result in immediate reduction of scholarship, suspension from competition or expulsion from the program, the implementation of a mandatory team community service program and weekly team alcohol education programming.

The four captains will miss North Dakota’s game Oct. 19 against Alaska-Anchorage at the Brice Alaska Goal Rush in Fairbanks.

Boston Bad Boyz Part II: Sex In The Penalty Box

by Mary Carmichael

When Boston University released its report Wednesday on hockey players’ “culture of sexual entitlement,” it kept most of the investigation details — including accounts of sexual debauchery and wide-ranging allegations of academic trouble — confined to confidential subcommittee reports.

Here are the highlights:
At a 2009 NCAA championship party at Agganis Arena dozens of guests drank from kegs in the locker room showers and took to the ice naked to shoot pucks.  At the same party people were having sex in the penalty box.

One player told the task force, “You don’t ask [permission for sex] when you are drunk,” adding that he did not see how the actions of the two players charged last year constituted sexual assault.

A BU student told of Facebook postings, “in which hockey players boast about their sexual exploits,” referring to conquests as “kills.”

The subcommittee findings also noted that some BU hockey players have SAT scores “far below the vast majority of their classmates.”

Faculty members gave the task force mixed assessments of hockey players as students. One professor described them as “respectful, prepared, and active.” But another told of six players who intimidated classmates, answered their cellphones mid-lecture, and “tried to ‘hijack’ his course,” the report says. The professor told the leader of the group to shape up; instead, all six players dropped the class.

Parker & his coaching staff were essentially given carte blanche for overseeing the team’s behavior. One team member said Parker “cares too much about hurting the important players’ feelings. . . . He’ll criticize, then apologize.”

Bad Boyz: Culture Of Sexual Entitlement At BU

(above) A Boston University task force called out the school's hockey program for a “culture of sexual entitlement” that exists among the players
From: Boston.com
by Peter Schworm

A Boston University task force has concluded that the men’s hockey team is detached from the general campus and that a “culture of sexual entitlement” exists among some players, a mindset college officials say contributed to two alleged sexual assaults on campus during the past season.

“Our assessment has shown that a culture of sexual entitlement exists among some players on the men’s ice hockey team, stemming in part from their elevated social status on campus,” stated the 11-page report, which was released today.

University officials said the culture is marked by heavy alcohol use and casual sexual encounters, and called for a range of reforms to tighten oversight of the team and bring it more into the fold of campus life [read entire article].

Bad Boyz: Drunk Gopher Hockey Player Ticketed

by Paul Walsh
.
A University of Minnesota Gopher hockey player has been cited for disorderly conduct after police witnessed him urinating in public in Stillwater, Minnesota last weekend.

A police report says Erik Haula was "extremely intoxicated" when he urinated outside the Freight House in view of others after the bars closed early Saturday.  Haula was then turned over to a friend, whom police described as "somewhat sober."

The officer wrote in his report that he witnessed Haula "urinating while standing on Water Street on the west side of the Freight House Restaurant & Bar in plain view of the bar crowd after bar closing."

The officer also noted in his report that even though "it was clear that he was extremely intoxicated," the 2009 Wild draft choice "was very cooperative. No problems."

Haula, a native of Finland, will be a junior this coming season for the Gophers. He led the team last season with 49 points, scoring 20 goals and earning 29 assists.

He played one season of high school hockey at Shattuck-St. Mary's in Faribault, Minn.

Gophers Athletic Department spokesman Garry Bowman says hockey coach Don Lucia is aware of the incident, has talked to Haula and will handle the matter internally. The Gopher forward will be a junior this year. He led the team last season with 49 points, scoring 20 goals and earning 29 assists.

LetsGoDU Names BU Team "Bad Boyz Of The Year"

On the holiest of college hockey days, when the Hobey Baker Committee awards its grand prize to the best player, LetsGoDU awards its 2012 Bad Boyz Of The Year Award.

For the first time ever an entire hockey team has walked away with the prestigious Golden Handcuffs.  2011-12 was the "Year of the Felony."  College hockey players players took social irresponsibility to to a new low.  But no individual or team did more to sully its reputation than the once mighty Boston University hockey program.

Gone are the days of bar fights, pinching co-eds in bars, drunk driving and missing curfew.  Now the buzzwords are money laundering, sexual assault and battery.

Boston University senior and Hockey East leading goal scorer Corey Trivino kicked things off in December charged with three counts of indecent assault and battery. Charlie Coyle, a Minnesota Wild prospect, quit the BU hockey team five days after Trivino’s arrest, saying he was “done being a student-athlete’’ and wanted to focus fully on hockey.  Not to be outdone, Max Nicastro, a defenseman on the BU men’s hockey team, was arrested in February by the Boston University Police and charged with sexual assault.

Trivinio was a two-time Bad Boyz contender.  Back in May 2010, Trivino was suspended for an alcohol-related incident before the Hockey East semifinals and missed time at the start of the 2010-11 season.

Runner-Up - Michael Colavecchia, after completing his freshman hockey season (6g, 12a) at Rochester Institute of Technology, was arrested over the Summer and charged with money laundering and conspiracy in an alleged scheme to defraud the Toronto Transit Commission.

Bad Boyz: Another BU Hockey Star Arrested

(above) Max Nicastro is held on $25,000 bail
From: BU Today

Max Nicastro, a defenseman on the BU men’s hockey team, was arrested early Sunday morning by the Boston University Police and charged with sexual assault. BU Police Chief Thomas Robbins says his department is working with the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, which is investigating the allegations. Nicastro is accused of sexual assault by a female student on campus. He is being held on $25,000 cash bail, and will be arraigned in Brighton District Court on Tuesday.

Michael Lynch, BU athletic director, says Nicastro has been suspended from the hockey team pending the outcome of the investigation.

Nicastro, a junior, becomes the second Terrier to be arrested for sexual assault this season. Corey Trivino was arrested on Dec. 11 and was subsequently dismissed from the team.

According to Boston.com, other than Nicastro and Trivino, fewer than five of BU’s 33,000 students this academic year have faced charges related to sexual assault, according to a school official. The hockey team appears to be cornering the market on sexual assault along the Charles River.

Charlie Coyle, a Minnesota Wild prospect, quit the BU hockey team five days after Trivino’s arrest, saying he was “done being a student-athlete’’ and wanted to focus fully on hockey.

Bad Boyz: Boston University Star Arrested

(above) BU's Corey Trivino scored a goal against DU earlier in the season
From: USCHO.com & Boston Hockey Blog

Boston University senior and Hockey East leading goal scorer Corey Trivino was arrested Sunday night and charged with three counts of indecent assault and battery.
.
According to the police report, the incident began when a female Resident Assistant heard residents of a room being extremely loud. The RA went to the room to tell them to quiet down, and Trivino followed her back to her room and pushed her door open, the report states. She said in the report that she told Trivino to go back to his room, but instead he allegedly started kissing and groping the victim. The victim told Trivino he was being inappropriate and should leave her room, and he left, according to the police report.

A few minutes later, Trivino allegedly returned and was banging on her door. The RA opened the door slightly and Trivino tried to kiss her, but she pushed him away, according to the police report. The RA said in the police report that she told Trivino "You need to stop," and "You need to go." Trivino allegedly cornered the victim by her desk and attempted to kiss her as she pushed him away, the police report said. She said in the police report that she managed to get him to leave at that time and she then texted a friend for help.

Trivino then returned a third time and banged loudly on the door, according to the report. The victim said in the report that she needed to open the door as part of her RA duties. Trivino allegedly forced his way in again and tried to kiss her, then sat on her bed, took his shoes off, said he would sleep there that night and laid down.

At that time, the RA called the Resident Director of the area, the police report said. When Trivino heard her on the phone with the Resident Director, he put his shoes on and ran out of her room, the police report said, and then the Resident Director told the RA to call the BU police.

According to the police report, "a very intoxicated male" got on the elevator with the police responding to the call. The male identified himself as Trivino and identified his room number as that of the RA, the police report said, at which time he was arrested.
.
Trivino, also charged with two counts of breaking and entering in the nighttime and one count of assault with attempt to rape, is no longer a member of the hockey team, head coach Jack Parker said in the article.

Back in May 2010, Trivino was suspended for an alcohol-related incident before the Hockey East semifinals and missed time at the start of the 2010-11 season.   He also missed part on the 2010 season with a broken leg.

Trivino had 13 goals and 17 points in 15 games this season and ends his Terriers’ career with 73 points in 112 games. He was drafted by the New York Islanders in 2008.

Duluth Hockey Star Arrested After Cop Scuffle

(above) Bad, Bad J.T. Brown went from Frozen Four hero to fleeing & scuffling with police outside Grandma's in Duluth last month

From: Duluth News-Tribune
by Mark Stodghill

The rookie of the year on the University of Minnesota Duluth’s national championship men’s hockey team has been summoned to appear in St. Louis County District Court on charges that he gave a false name to a peace officer and attempted to flee police during an incident at Grandma’s Sports Garden.

Joshua Thomas “J.T.” Brown of Burnsville, Minn., is charged with a gross misdemeanor and a misdemeanor after allegedly giving Duluth police another man’s Minnesota driver’s license as identification when he entered Grandma’s Sports Garden about 11:30 p.m. June 18, Grandma’s Marathon race day.

Brown, who was the most valuable player in the NCAA Frozen Four this year, turned 21 on July 2, two Saturdays after the bar incident that got him in trouble.

According to the criminal complaint:

The officer who checked Brown’s identification could tell from the driver’s license photograph that he wasn’t the same person. When the officer asked Brown what his name was, the hockey player gave the name of the person listed on the driver’s license. He also provided the address of the person listed on the driver’s license as his address.

The officer asked Brown to sign his name. Brown obliged but said that it might not be the same because he had had a few drinks. The officer told Brown that the signature didn’t match, the facial photo didn’t match and that he didn’t know who he was. He was going to have to transport him to the St. Louis County Jail until he could be identified by his real name.

Police said that Brown eventually stated that his name was “J.T.” He then provided his last name. He was asked what the J.T. stood for. He said it didn’t stand for anything. It was just J.T., he said.

The officer told Brown that if he cooperated he would be given a citation for a city ordinance violation that would not go on his criminal record; he could just pay a fine and be done with the matter.

While the officer was writing the citation and talking to dispatch, Brown allegedly ran around the officer and tried to exit the front doors. The officer reached out and grabbed Brown by the back of his jacket. Brown was able to break the hold and went through the doors directly into another officer. He changed direction and started running down the sidewalk but an officer was able to grab onto his sweat shirt.

An officer reported that Brown flailed his arms while spinning in a circle. An officer pulled Brown’s sweat shirt over his head and was able to get him in a bear hug and take him to the ground.

Two officers put Brown’s hands behind his back as he continued to squirm and try to get off the ground. One officer kneeled on Brown in the mid-back area and another kneeled on his shoulder to hold him down while handcuffs were applied.

Brown, the son of former Minnesota Vikings running back Ted Brown, has been summoned to appear in court on Aug. 18. He couldn’t be reached for comment on Wednesday.

“We are aware of the situation and we’ll deal with it appropriately at the right time,” UMD hockey coach Scott Sandelin said.

Coming out of high school in 2007, twin brothers Rhamel & Shamel Bratton from Long Island were two of the best lacrosse players in the country. Featured in Sports Illustrated and other lacrosse publications they were portrayed as as future superstars.  When Virginia coach Dom Starsia landed the pair it was a recruiting coup of epic proportions.

Once at Virgina the pair established themselves as two of the most prolific players in college lacrosse, leading Virginia to four straight NCAA Tournament appearances.  Shamel was twice named first team All-American.

Today coach Starsia announced that senior midfielder Rhamel Bratton would not return to the team to play in Saturday’s NCAA tournament semifinal against the University of Denver at M&T Bank Stadium.

“Status unchanged,” Starsia said during an NCAA-organized conference call on Tuesday morning. “He will not be activated for this weekend’s game.”

Shamel was kicked off the Virginia men's lacrosse team for a violation of team policies in late April and Rhamel was suspended from the team indefinitely, but many thought he would return for the Final Four.

According to individuals with knowledge of the situation, the Brattons were suspended for the Stony Brook game in February because they violated the team’s alcohol policy, which is established by the players.

After the suspensions were announced, senior defenseman Bray Malphrus called the policy, which was newly crafted for the current season, "the strictest, most stringent rule since I've been here."

"And that's by design," he added.

After the May 2010 death of Virginia women’s lacrosse player Yeardley Love, it was revealed that eight Virginia men’s lacrosse players — including George Huguely, who was indicted April 18 on murder charges in connection with Love’s death — had been arrested for alcohol-related incidents (two were found not guilty).

According to individuals with knowledge of the situation, the Bratton twins made it well known they never intended to follow the alcohol policy and that they tried to get other players to vote to change the policy, but were unsuccessful.

The same sources also said the Brattons traveled to Stony Brook — which is about a 40-minute drive from their home town of Huntington Station, N.Y. — with their gear and offered to play despite their suspensions. After the Brattons’ older brother learned they would be held out of the game, he confronted Starsia, sources said.

"I want to wish Shamel the very best in his future endeavors," Virginia coach Dom Starsia said in a statement at the time. "He has made many contributions to the program. At the same time, there are standards of behavior within the framework of the team that we expect to be met by all of our student-athletes. Failure to do so on a consistent basis has resulted in the loss of the privilege of being a member of this team."

Shamel Bratton was voted off the team by teammates after a third violation of team rules, according to The Washington Post. Virginia players also reportedly voted to suspend his brother, Rhamel, indefinitely for a second violation of team rules.

The incident leading to the news involved the brothers traveling to Long Island to attend the funeral of the mother of Maryland lacrosse player Ryan Young.

The Brattons did not attend practice to attend the funeral, according to the Post. That missed practice was excused, and at least two other Long Island-native Virginia players were reportedly at the funeral, including starting goaltender Adam Ghitelman and his brother Jacob. The Brattons are from Huntington on Long Island.

However, the Ghitelmans returned for practice the following day, according to the Post. Shamel and Rhamel Bratton did not.

Shamel had twice been suspended for a game earlier this season for violating team rules. The senior was suspended first for the Cavaliers road game at Stony Brook Feb. 26 and again for a home game against Maryland April 2. After the Maryland game, Starsia termed Shamel Bratton's suspension "indefinite," but the senior midfielder returned for Virginia's next game against North Carolina.

Rhamel was also suspended for the Stony Brook game for violating team rules. Starsia did not address his indefinite suspension relating to the latest incident in a brief, three-paragraph statement.

Shamel Bratton ends his Virginia career with 129 points, the most among Cavaliers' midfielders all-time. Rhamel is tied for 14th on UVA's all-time midfielder goal leaderboard, with 59 goals.
