Hakstol Stands Up For Fighting Sioux Logo

Say what you will about University of North Dakota hockey coach Dave Hakstol, but at least he stood up for the Fighting Sioux logo in this memorable press conference last season. Of course Hakstol is an alum of the university, so he understands the importance of the issue to his university and its supporters.

I love the Fighting Sioux Logo!!! In today's PC world this is one of the biggest travesties that I see. I have a Scandinavian heritage, do I get upset with the Minnesota Viking's name? No, in fact I'm proud of it. I feel badly for the Unversity and the students and Alumni because if they take this LOGO away from them their taking away their Heritage. How possibly could anyone think this LOGO is degrading to the Sioux? They picked this Logo because of it's Heritage and it's fighting spirit...

Wow, Hakstol is surprisingly articulate. I figured he would be hard pressed to put together a complete sentence, like so many knuckle dragging, toothless stooges up there.

To my understanding the Souix can't get rid of the nickname or anything since the sponsor of their arena only agreed to fund it on those grounds. I'm not exactly sure but we're discussing this issue in my sports sociology class.

no matter what you heard. nobody is gonna tear down a 100 million dollar arena over the universitys logo. their will definately be millions of dollars in renovations to remove the thousands of sioux logos. I'm just hoping they leave the giant marble logo in the floor of the concourse. it is a thing of beauty

The marble logo doesn't have to go, rugs with the logo as they wear out will have to be replaced with a carpet that doesn't have a logo on it.

At the end of the three-year period, should UND not have namesake approval
from both Spirit Lake and Standing Rock, UND agrees to transition to a new name and logo. The NCAA agrees to provide UND additional time until August 15, 2011 to accomplish the transition. In addition, certain imagery is allowed to transition at later dates, and some imagery would be allowed to remain indefinitely without implicating
championship restrictions.
