2010 DU recruit David Makowski is tearing up the USHL in his first four games for the Green Bay Gamblers. He has three goals, fours assists and is +6. He leads his team in every statistical category. Finally, he's been named USHL Defensive Player of the Week twice in the first two weeks of the season.

Makowski from Wildwood, Missouri had a lot of scholarship offers to play college hockey this season, but really wanted to play at the University of Denver so will enroll at DU next year. He is third in the USHL in scoring and is the highest scoring defenseman in the league.

2011 DU recruit Scott Mayfield is a big player. A Junior in high school (he just turned 17 on Wednesday), Mayfield is 6'4" and 175 lbs. He has a goal and an assist in three games for the USHL Youngstown Phantoms. If he fills out in the next two years, the NHL teams will be drooling over his size and potential.

Jason Zucker and Nick Shore are playing for the US National Development Under-18 Team this season. They will kick off the USHL component of their schedule this week. Playing against colleges and universities in exhibition games, Zucker has two goals. Shore is the younger brother of DU Freshman Drew Shore.

DU is looking for one more scholarship recruit to round out the 2010 recruiting class. Then perhaps they'll acquire a recruited walk-on or two.

The future looks bright. With those two championships as benchmarks and our top coaching staff D.U. has become a first choice for many of these elite youngsters. Our coaching staff appeals to these kids that want to develop into NHL material.Steve Miller gets the oscar. He's the recruiting guru.

I think 2011 will be a real test for recruiting. We have a huge Junior class, 9 or 10 depending on Ryder--will he stay for a 5th year?
