CC 2 DU 1 Final

(above) Brian Gifford introduces himself to the Colorado College Tigers

CC eked out a 2-1 win at Magness this evening. DU opened the game with a 2 minute flurry but CC goalie Joe Howe kept them off of the scoresheet. Nick Dineen put CC ahead 1-0 at the 8:22 mark of the 1st period.

DU came out with energy in the 2nd period and Patrick Wiercioch tied the game at 1 at the 1:05 mark of the period. Rhett Rakhshani and Marc Cheverie got assists on the Wiercioch goal. DU took a penalty and Bill Sweatt put CC ahead 2-1 on the PP at the 16:03 mark of the period.

The 3rd period was scoreless and DU pulled Marc Cheverie with 1:25 left. DU had a number of chances in the last minute and Joe Howe stopped all of the shots.

The game was an exciting close fough battle between two archrivals. DU had a number of chances to tie the game but couldn't. Both goalies played well and the difference was CC's power play goal which Chevy had no chance on.

Even through DU lost the game, the team was presented with the MacNaughton Trophy for winning the WCHA Championship. The winner of tomorrow night's game wins the Gold Pan. With tonight's loss DU drops to #2 in the Pairwise.

What you might have missed; Paul Stastny was ushered onto the ice during a 1st period break in the action. He was wearing his USA jersey and Silver Medal from the Olympics. He removed the USA jersey to reveal his 60th anniversary DU jersey. Very cool.

WTF??? Why can't we beat CC???? I'm sick of losing to those dipshits.

DU is 1-1-1- against them this season and a win tomorrow night gives them a 2-1-1 record and the Gold Pan.

The flameout has begun.

This was a good hockey game -- DU played pretty well, CC played a little better and a little smarter.

I think the turning point in the game frankly was CC surviving the opening fury when DU looked like they were going to steamroll.

I like DU's chances tomorrow night. DU hasn't been swept all season.

I'd rather lose one now than during the big tournament. We should have all known the winning streak would come to end sooner than later.

Time to start a new winning streak tomorrow and skate the Gold Pan around the CSWA. Pretty even series so far this season.

DU 2 CC 1
DU 4 CC 4
DU 1 CC 2

Disappointing way to end the regular season at home. I kept waiting for the Pios to take control, but they just couldn't seem to sustain any momentum. CC played well--good forecheck, crisp passing, used their speed effectively, and their goalie made the saves when he needed to.

It sure would have been nice to reclaim the Gold Pan in front of a very loud and festive crowd, but hopefully it happens tomorrow.

CC was the hungrier team. That pretty much sums it up......

Not Howe; but Testwuide is who won that game. He played..... like his Brother used to. That's OK - we'll get it tomorrow night. The Gold Pan will be ever sweeter to capture right there in Worst; oops my bad... I mean in WORLD arena

I think DU will be fine. The haven't twice in a row all season, and I think they will take care of business tomorrow in the Springs.

I thought DU had more sustained offensive zone pressure then CC did, but a lot of shots were off target tonight.

CC had more SOG and a more effective power play than DU.

Cool to see Stastny show off his medal and changing over his USA jersey to a DU jersey,, and there were a number of Avalanche players at the game tonight besides Stastny.

Watched the game on TV tonight and Howe made some excellent saves. A number of times shots which may have appeared to be have gone wide were actually shots he just got a piece of and tipped away. Colborne had several great chances that Howe stopped him cold on. He led the team with 4 shots on goal.

I've never seen a team handed a trophy and have absolutely no facial expression. That might as well had been a casket they paraded around the building for us. Somber, somber, somber. I've seen NHL teams get the Persident's or Divisional champ trophies, before the Stanley Cup Playoffs... who showed more emotion that Rhett and his team. That was just freaking wierd.

Cut them some slack. They just lost a tight game to their rival and they were spent, as were the fans.

At least DU doesn't celebrate like CC does when they win it and then choke in the playoffs or regionals. That trophy is nice, but it means nothing in the big picture and they showed that tonight.

I didn't like how by the time Rhett skated by the student section with the trophy at the end of the game, the entire student section had already left apart from the first two or three rows. And this was hardly 5 minutes after the final buzzer! I feel like our seniors deserved better from the students on their last regular season home game in Magness... Also, seemed on the TV (to me) like the students just sorta stopped cheering and making noise in the third? They were fantastic in the first though, don't get me wrong.

Having a trophy presentation after a tough loss to a rival is bad timing.

They should have handed out the trophy in between periods, and Stastny should have done the honors with his silver medal.

Hey guess what everybody? I just got a call from Boone (who aparantly was mistaken for John Travolta on more than one occaision tonight)... and he indeed confirmed that CC STILL SUCKS

The white tux on Boone was epic. Well done.

DU didn't handle the puck well at all tonight and CC played like their life depended on it. Though what do you expect since their season is in ruins, it's all they have left to play for. It's not like CC played all that much better either. One more game to decide the Bed Pan *ya that's the new name* and unfortunately we'll have to take a win in the Litter Box if we even want to see it and lose it ;).

As for the trophy ceremony... I didn't really care, truth be told. When you lose a game like that, what do you expect. I watched the ceremony, but the loss really killed it.

Then for the student section it was great and even when we were down by one they never gave in. However you talk about the 3rd period and DU was playing horrible dump and chase hockey. The students were their and ready to cheer but DU didn't give them to cheer about. Yes the players feed off the crowd but the crowd also feeds off the players.

Aww and seeing Staz back on DU ice with his silver medal... throwing off the USA jersey and showing off his DU colors was really awesome. Truly one of the most awesome players I have ever met and watched.

Did the students really desert the players and not watch the McN. Cup presentation? The bars can wait for crying out loud.

I'd have broken out the MacNaughton during pre-game introductions.

The Stastny intro was awesome.

Epic night for the fans & student section.

What did DU do for Senior Night?
Pre-game introductions?

puck swami said...

Standard senior night pregame stuff- PA announcer reads seniors career on and off-ice highlights while player video clips are shown on the scoreboard. Then name is called, player skates to center ice in spotlight as crowd cheers. Once all six seniors are at center ice, players turn to each end of the arena with a stick salute and skate to the bench. Rock and Ruegs got the biggest cheers to no surprise.

Cut the students a break. Did you see the the huge group of them already lined up by 6:00, basically beating down the doors to get into the arena? Then the screams and hollers and excitement once they got in? I have never, ever in 30+ years seen that much pre-game enthusiasm from them.

It was the players' job to match that intensity and they did not. I would have left a bit disheartened if I were them as well...

Nice white-out!

As a student, alot of us did not even know the cup would be presented after the game. We thought they would do it before the game or between periods. Doing it at the end of the game after such a tough loss? even the players didn't want to be there

"I've never seen a team handed a trophy and have absolutely no facial expression."

What are you brain dead? They just lost a tight game to their hated rival. Of course they were stone faced.

Rhett managed a grin as he came by the student section. Or what was left of it.

Are they broadcasting the game from the top of Pikes Peak on FSN? The camera man may need to learn how to use the zoom feature if they're going to put the camera crew up on the roof!!
