3 DU Players Expected To Be Drafted This Weekend

Three University of Denver hockey players expect selection in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, slated for June 25-26 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Calif., home arena of the Los Angeles Kings. The first round of the Draft will be televised tonight on Versus at 5 PM MT.
Incoming freshman Beau Bennett, Jason Zucker and Sam Brittain expect to hear their names called when the draft begins this weekend.
Bennett is currently ranked No. 32 among North American skaters in the final Central Scouting Rankings, while Zucker is ranked No. 51. Brittain is ranked No. 8 among North American goaltenders.
Bennett could become DU's third first-round pick if selected on Friday. Bennett would join Craig Redmond (LA Kings/1984/6th overall) and Joe Colborne (Boston/2008/16th overall) as the only players to don the crimson and gold as first round NHL selections.

He is the only player in the Top 10 that will be playing college hockey next season.
Shore has been projected to be drafted in the first round by every recognized scouting service in the country. A native of Colorado, he has already committed to play at the University of Denver next season.
That's not to say Shore is looking to stay close to home to advance in his hockey career. He has already spent seasons playing in the Honeybaked program in Detroit, and in Junior A in British Columbia. One scout in Ann Arbor this year up Shore's game like this: "He's a big center who isn't flashy and has decent skating and always seems to get where he has to go. You have to project where he'll be when he grows into his frame and fills out."

In the long history of University of Denver hockey, and despite the seven national championships the program has collected since 1958, only one Pioneers player has been selected in the first round of the NHL draft.
That's why Joe Colborne has a chance to make DU history even before he actually dons a Pioneers jersey.
Colborne, perhaps the premier prize in what is expected to be an impact group of incoming freshmen at DU, has a strong shot at becoming the second Pioneers player to get picked in the first round when the draft begins Friday in Ottawa (5 MDT, Versus).
The second through seventh rounds will be conducted Saturday.
Incoming Pioneer David Carle, the brother of 2006 Hobey Baker Award winner Matt Carle, is expected to be selected during the second day.
"You hear a lot of things, but most of those are from people who don't have too much say in what the teams are going to be picking," Colborne said. "If I wind up going in the first round, it will be an unbelievable experience. If I don't and I go later in the draft, it won't matter to me at all.
"I think the draft is kind of blown out of proportion a little bit in how important it is because no matter where you get drafted, it's still a long road until you get to the NHL.
"I'm getting excited and I'm not that nervous anymore because I've done pretty much everything I could do. Now it's kind of out of my hands. When I go down to Ottawa, it will be more of a 'enjoy the moment' type thing."
DU's only first-round selection occurred in 1984 when Craig Redmond was selected sixth by the Los Angeles Kings.
Colborne is not expected to go that early-many draft forecasters have the 6-foot-5, 195-pound forward going in the last half of the first round - but his stock has soared after a stellar career in the Alberta Junior Hockey League.
Colborne, a native of Calgary, Alberta, led the Camrose Kodiaks to a second consecutive AJHL regular-season title and led all scorers in the playoffs with eight goals and eight assists.
Regardless of where Colborne is drafted, he is eager to join a program that has sent, among others, Carle and Avalanche center Paul Stastny to the NHL.
"That is one of the main reasons I decided to go to Denver," Colborne said. "Since I've been down to visit the campus, meet the guys and talk to coach (George Gwozdecky), I'm even more excited to get there. They are such good coaches. They have done it before and they have helped so many guys move on to the next level. I can't wait to get started."

Denver Post Pimps DU Hockey Season Tickets
From: Denver PostIt's a good time to renew your University of Denver hockey tickets for the 2008-09 season. The Pioneers got great news last week from freshman Tyler Bozak, who announced he would return to DU for his sophomore season.
Bozak, an undrafted NHL free agent, paced DU with 18 goals and 34 points last season and garnered interest from numerous NHL teams.
He said he instructed his "family adviser" — otherwise known as an uncontracted agent — to let all NHL teams know of his intention to return to school.
With Bozak back, DU is pegged to return 11 of its top 12 forwards from last season, and incoming freshman Joe Colborne could be the program's next superstar.
Last week, Colborne was named Canada's junior-A player of the year, and in June he could be DU's first NHL first-round draft pick since defenseman Craig Redmond in 1984.

RED DEER, AB - The WHL Red Deer Rebels selected Connor Redmond with their first pick, 11th overall, in the 2007 Western Hockey League Bantam Draft. Redmond was a forward with the Western Canadian Champion Burnaby Winter Club (Bantam AAA) this past season.Connor Redmond is 15 years old and is considered to be one of the hottest prospects in Western Canada. He is the son of former University of Denver Alum Craig Redmond. Craig finished high school early and enrolled at DU when he was 16 years old.
Craig only played one season at the University of Denver in 1982-83 but set a single season scoring record for a defenseman with 54 points and was named WCHA Freshman of the Year. He remains the only DU player ever selected in the first round of the NHL draft.
Connor is supposedly trying to decide between playing college hockey or playing in the WHL. He can't do both as the WHL is classified as a "professional league" by the NCAA. DU and other NCAA schools can only hope that he goes the BCHL route and remains college eligible. That being said, its hard to imagine that Red Deer would waste a first round draft choice on a player that wasn't at least interested in playing in the WHL.

Craig Redmond still holds several DU hockey records more than 20 years after his last game for the Pioneers. Craig was only 16 when he enrolled at DU and still holds the single season scoring record for a defenseman with 54 points. In 1983 he was named WCHA Freshman of the Year after his only season at DU.
He remains the only NHL 1st Round Draft choice to ever play at DU. He was drafted #6 overall by the LA Kings and later played for the Edmonton Oilers.
Now his son Connor is moving up the Bantam ranks and trying to decide between the WHL or college hockey. He's still a few seasons away but is already one of the top prospects for his age.

2. Glenn Anderson (Hockey) - Played in 1979 for Denver and Canadian Olympic team and went on to a 500+point NHL career, mostly with the Edmonton Oilers glory teams of their Stanley Cup era in the 1980s.
3. Craig Patrick (Hockey) - Captain of an NCAA title team in 1969 with Denver, Patrick played in the NHL for many years, was the assistant coach of the 1980 "Miracle on Ice" Gold Medal US Hockey team, became AD at Denver, GM of the New York Rangers and is now president and GM of the Pittsburgh Penguins.
4. Dan Schatzeder (Baseball) - Former Pioneer pitching and hitting star turned journeyman pitcher for a number of MLB teams for 15 years, but won a World Series Ring with the Minnesota Twins (1987). Best known of Denver's six players to make it to major league baseball.
5. Vince Boryla (Basketball) - Was an All-American at Denver in 1949-50 and went on to become a US Olympic and NBA player, head coach and GM all with the New York Knicks, as well as an basketball executive with other teams. Best known of the 5 DU players to play in the NBA.
6. Kevin Dineen (Hockey) - Former Pioneer captain played 20+ years in the NHL, including all-star years with Hartford and Philadelphia. Retired in 2003.
7. Sam Etcheverry (Football) - Was a star QB for many years in the Canadian Football League from the 50s to the 70s and is a member of the CFL Hall of Fame. Brief NFL Stint with St. Louis Cardinals. Probably DU's best known football player.
8. Jerome Biffle (Track and Field) - DU's 1950 NCAA long jump champion who won 1952 Olympic Long Jump Gold Medal at Helsinki Olympics (24 feet, 10 inches). Died in 2002 after three decades coaching at Denver's East High School.
9. Peter McNab (Hockey) - Played long career with Boston Bruins and New Jersey Devils. Now Broadcaster for Colorado Avalanche
10. Byron Beck (Basketball) - Shooter played 10 years for Denver Nuggets in both ABA and NBA. Had his number retired by the Nuggets.

DU Basketball: David Adkins is a former Pioneer basketball player now known as "Sinbad" -- a moderately famous comedian. Former DU coach Stan Albeck coached at DU and later with San Antonio, New Jersey and Chicago in the NBA. Current San Antonio coach Greg Popovich has a masters' degree from DU.
