TrotterWatch™ - CSTV Blogger Weighs In

For those of you that thought this would die a quiet death after DU announced Trotter was going pro, here's more from Elliott Olshansky from CSTV's Rink Rat Blog.

"First, the bad news: after reading a report from Gregg Drinnan of the Kelowna Daily News that Brock Trotter is leaving Denver to sign with the Montreal Canadiens and play with their AHL affiliate in Hamilton, Ontario, I reached out to both the Canadiens PR department and a source very familiar with the team. The Canadiens have no official comment at this time, but based on the other information I've received, I wouldn't be surprised to hear something tomorrow morning on Trotter signing.

Of course, the reports out of Denver over the past week - not to mention Trotter's absence against Minnesota State last weekend - lead us to believe that this move isn't entirely Trotter's choice. If that's the case, then obviously, it's very unfortunate. I really like Trotter's game, and Trotter was very nice when I spoke with him in person last year around this time. I do hope that Trotter can overcome whatever issues forced him to leave Denver and have a successful career as a pro."

LetsGoDU Odds and Ends

(left) Slow news day to say the least

Mannino got a little bit of love in the CSTV.com Hobey Baker Poll but his stock is falling faster than mortgage backed securities in Colorado Springs.

Traffic has also slowed at the "Vote Mannino For Hobey" Facebook page.

Amy over at LetsGoMavs Blog has taken the liberty of ranking the DU players by "attractiveness." The good news for Mannino is that he still is scoring well with the ladies.

LetsGoDU2 has a list of the best articles we've stolen in the past year. We'll keep adding articles to LetsGoDU2 from time to time.

Hobey Polls Rank Mannino Highly

(above) Peter Mannino

Western College Hockey Blog cite DU goaltender Peter Mannino as their 2nd choice this week in their list of Hobey Baker Candidates.

Inside College Hockey haven't been impressed with Mannino's last three games and list him as a "Bear Market."

CSTV's Hobey Tracker Poll have Mannino as their 4th choice. Matt Carle was usually around 4th at this point of the season in his Hobey year.

No surprise that the LetsGoDU SuperHobeyPoll® has Mannino at #1.

Therea Spisak, the WCHA correspondent for USCHO.com seems to imply that LetsGoDU.might try to "rig" the Hobey Baker Fan Balloting in Mannino's favor. Moi?
"DU: The Pioneers have started the “Mannino for Hobey” campaign to promote senior netminder Peter Mannino. Mannino is a legit candidate this year, but we’ll see if Damien over at LetsGoDU (http://letsgodu.blogspot.com) can provide backing like they did with Danny King"

"Tuesday At The Rink" Chat

CSTV.com announced that U.S. National Team Development Program Under-18 Team Head Coach John Hynes will be the featured guest for this week’s “Tuesday @ the Rink” chats, presented by CSTV and US College Hockey Online.

DU players Rhett Rakhshani & Tyler Ruegsegger will play for Team USA. Hynes, who will coach Team USA at the 2008 World Junior Championship, will chat at 1 p.m. ET on Tuesday.

The chat room are open now, so fans can submit questions in advance.

Rink Rat Blog Has DU At #1

From: CSTV's Rink Rat Blog

In all the excitement this week we overlooked our favorite CSTV journalist Elliot Olshansky. No point dissin' the man who made former DU backup goaltender Danny King a national folk hero.

1. Denver - No disrespect to Michigan, but I'm still loving Denver's proven goaltending and experienced defensive corps along with a more-than-capable group of forwards. I also love the poise on this team, as displayed in the comeback win at St. Cloud. Sweeping a road series in the WCHA is a tall order no matter where you are, and the Pioneers came through. None of their four losses is anything to be ashamed of, and I still like the Pioneers if you put them on a neutral sheet with Michigan tomorrow.

Mannino Tied for 4th In Hobey Baker Poll

Elliot Olshansky Covers DU's Sweep Over Gophers

Do you ever get tired of reading so many articles about DU's thrashing of the Gophers this weekend? No? Me neither.

CSTV's Elliot Olshansky covered the series and has a pretty interesting conversation with Coach Gwozdecky after Sunday's victory. He also wrote a nice piece on Peter Mannino following the 5-1 victory on Friday night.

Key Quote
"They've moved a couple of [forwards] over, [Patrick] Mullen and [J.P.] Testwuide, who have done a pretty good job," Lucia said of the DU defensive corps, "and obviously, Butler's a very elite defenseman and so is Thomas."

Chris Butler Featured In Hockey Chatroom

University of Denver defenseman Chris Butler was the featured guest for this week’s “Tuesday @ the Rink” chats, presented by CSTV.com and USCHO.

Butler, whose Pioneers travel to Minnesota this weekend for a WCHA series, talked about the younger players on the team, goaltender Peter Mannino and his NHL summer camp with the Sabres.

Best Quote

John (Ohio): Chris, we know that Coach Gwozdecky is famous for saying things that you don't often hear from other coaches...is there anything particularly funny that sticks in your mind as a classic Gwoz story or saying?

Chris Butler: Well before I put my foot in my mouth let me just say that he is a great coach and teacher. But, a few weeks ago he was talking about how he can not read our minds and instead of saying, "We don't have ESP," he ended up saying, "We don't have ESPN," so we all got a good laugh out of that one. I just hope he doesn't bench me for this.

CSTV Rink Rat Blog Covers Denver Boone Survey
,
(left) Elliot Olshansky covers college hockey for CSTV. In the past year he visited nearly half the college hockey arenas in Division 1 (including Magness) and saw a majority of the teams play.

We've got a bit of everything going on today: a new schedule, a mascot issue, a new head coach in the women's game and a tad of rivalry debate fodder as we hop from Bemidji to Denver to Boston.
.
Sounds like one tough road trip!
.
Now, having mentioned Denver, I'd like to point out a very interesting survey being taken at DU right now. The school's Office of Institutional Research and Assessment is actually polling website visitors as to their preference between former mascot Boone and new (since 1999) mascot Ruckus. I know the change has long bothered Pioneer fans, and it was interesting that an April article in DU's student paper, the Clarion, didn't mention real political correctness issues with Boone, other than, "his portrayal of the Western stereotype of a guy. After all Denver Boone was a male pioneer and that could be awkward for the women's lacrosse team."
.
Is that the best they can do? Really? Well then, I guess we had ought to find a different mascot other than Jonathan Husky Dog to appear at UConn women's sporting events. Let Miami's women's teams know that Sebastian the Ibis won't be stopping by, and cancel Sam the Minuteman's reservations at the Mullins Center for women's basketball while we're at it. Heck, maybe Baldwin should stop going to BC women's games. After all, while we've never been officially told the gender of BC's lovable eagle mascot, "Baldwin" is the term Alicia Silverstone uses to describe attractive guys in Clueless (oops, there goes my hockey credibility again), so Baldwin's got to go, too.
.
But seriously, I don't think it's that big an issue. I mean I could see this if the all the DU teams were the Denver Boones - to be honest, I've wondered how female athletes at Fairfield (Stags), South Carolina (Gamecocks), etc. feel about their teams' gender-specific nicknames - but the team is the Pioneers, and Boone just happens to have been the mascot. And as far as I'm concerned, he should be again. But then, it's not really my business. It's up to the Denver students and alumni - and any other interested parties - to vote on this one.
Hakstol Gets Testy With St. Louis Media

Frozen Four Press Conference

One thing that was no laughing matter, however, was a question from a St. Louis Post-Dispatch writer about that little run-in with the law that Jonathan Toews and T.J. Oshie had a couple of months back. University of North Dakota hockey coach Dave Hakstol's response was that players learn from all their experiences, good and bad. When a follow-up question came about whether Toews and Oshie had shown that, a stone-faced Hakstol replied, "I think I just answered your question."
Olshansky Backs Ehn For Hobey Baker Award

From: Rink Rat Blog (CSTV.com)

by Elliott Olshansky

Well, we're still not perfect at the Hobey Watch, but we're working on it.

The Hobey Hat Trick for 2007 has been announced, and it will be David Brown of Notre Dame, Ryan Duncan of North Dakota and Eric Ehn of Air Force on Friday night, April 6, in St. Louis.

That's a little different from what our final Hobey Watch of 2007 projected, and certainly different than what I voted in the Hobey Watch. A lot of it is different, but it still makes sense...

First of all, here's my last Hobey Watch ballot.

1. Eric Ehn
2. T.J. Hensick
3. John Curry

And of course, the Hobey Watch's "Hat Trick" was...
1. David Brown
2. T.J. Hensick
3. Ryan Duncan.

OK, now let's go through the Hat Trick that we did get.

I'll start with the ones I didn't vote for.

David Brown: I always had a feeling that David Brown would be in the Hat Trick. The truth is that he's won the games when he's had to, with the notable exception of the Midwest Regional Final. Of course, he hasn't always had to, which speaks to how well the Irish played defense under Jeff Jackson this season, but I never thought it spoke too well for his Hobey candidacy. Obviously, I was relatively alone in that assessment, but I don't find that surprising. To be honest, I'm more surprised by what I wasn't alone on.

Ryan Duncan: Duncan made my list for the first time after I watched him at the Final Five, but he wasn't in my top three this week. I really can't point to too many reasons why not, other than the people I did have on there. That's really what it comes down to with this Hobey business: you can always ask "why not" one guy, but the question you should be prepared to answer is, "Well, who would you take out?" I certainly can't question Duncan's credentials, especially since he's the only Hobey Finalist who's still playing.

Now, about the one I did have...

Eric Ehn: I'm stunned. Absolutely stunned. I had plenty of reasons why Eric Ehn should be a Hobey Hat Trick member. I just didn't see those reasons coming into play. I suppose some of it had to do with Jordan Sigalet's run as a Hobey finalist in 2005, which stopped at the finalist level. However, as I've pointed out in the past, the parallel with Hobey Baker, a World War I fighter pilot, is very compelling. The other big thing, a point that I first saw raised by my CSTV colleague Dave Starman, is how much more difficult academy life is than that of a typical student-athlete. For Ehn to be able to handle that and be a 60-point scorer is exceedingly impressive.

That leaves the two who didn't make it: T.J. Hensick and John Curry.

I'm just as surprised by Hensick's exclusion as I am by Ehn's inclusion. Really, when do you see a senior who's leading the nation in scoring wind up out of the Hat Trick? I guess the 10-minute misconduct that kept him out of action down the stretch in the North Dakota game really hurt him. I don't know if he'd have won if not for that, but I have to imagine it kept him out of the top three.

As for Curry, I thought he had a magical story in going from walk-on to Hockey East Player of the Year, and he still does. I think the way BU struggled down the stretch really hurt Curry. This may not be a team award, but Curry's candidacy was built on stealing games for BC. When that stopped happening, I think Curry wound up closer to Jeff Jakaitis to Brian Elliott. No disrespect to Jakaitis, who certainly has a bright future ahead of him, but goalies whose teams don't win have a hard time getting Hobey consideration, no matter how good their numbers are.

So, all of that said, who will win? I have to be honest: I don't know. Besides, even if I said I knew, would you believe me after I only got one of the three Hat Trick members right? Still, I'll take a stab at it.
.
Ehn has the numbers and the intangibles, but he doesn't play in a powerful conference. Then again, I thought that would keep him from getting this far, and clearly, it didn't. I've said all along that Eric is the ideal candidate to receive an award named for Hobey Baker. Obviously, there are people who agree up to a certain point. Who am I to say where that point is or isn't?
.
Brown has been a leader on his team in a banner year, but his numbers don't stack up to other goalies who have been up for (and in Ryan Miller's case won) the Hobey in recent years. I mean, really, what do you say to Brian Elliott and David McKee if David Brown was to win the Hobey with numbers that don't come close to theirs, beating out T.J. Hensick in the process?
.
That leaves Duncan, who probably has the least going against him out of anyone. He plays on a line with two first-round draft picks, which could work against him. Other than that, though, it's nearly impossible to make the case against Ryan Duncan. Ladies and gentlemen, your 2007 Hobey Baker Winner...Ryan Duncan!

Maybe.

After all, if there's one thing we've learned from this, even if there's nothing wrong with you, there could be more right with someone else.

Mannino Fielded Questions Online

CSTV.com hosted an online chat with DU Goaltender Peter Mannino this afternoon

Peter answered questions about the rivaly with Colorado College, facing the best players in the WCHA, DU's goaltender situation and many other questions. Its a good read.

Elliot Olshansky CSTV.com - King For A Day

Danny King brings DU home against Duluth

Late Friday night, the Denver Pioneers were putting the finishing touches on their 20th win of the season. Minnesota Duluth had threatened to tie the game in the third period, but goals by freshmen Tyler Ruegsegger and Rhett Rakhshani less than three minutes apart had all but iced the victory for the Pioneers, the 100th for the current senior class.

Still, in the eyes of Pioneers netminder Peter Mannino, the evening was not yet complete.

"Peter Mannino was yelling at me from the net," Denver assistant coach Derek Lalonde recalled. "He said, `Put Kinger in. Put Kinger in.'" (rest of the story)
(above) Why our gender neutral "bird" was prostituting itself with the Chick-Fil-A Cow during the first intermission wasn't exactly clear, but I can assure you that the Denver Boone would have taken the Heffer down.

CSTV Bloggers Outakes & Notes From Last Night's Game

Elliot Olshansky from CSTV.com joined us before the game and had some comments about Spanky's, The Crimson Creatures (DU's Student Section) & the game. Here are some of the highlights:

  • My pal DG Goddard of Let's Go DU fame invited me to drop by Spanky's Roadhouse before the game to hang out with some Denver and Minnesota Duluth fans, and I'm very glad I took him up on the offer (of course, after he advertised my appearance on his blog, I didn't have much of a choice).
  • Two words about the Pioneers in the first period: Brock Trotter. The redshirt freshman was everywhere in the first period: scoring the power play goal to put DU up 1-0, nearly making it 2-0 on a shorthanded breakaway (he had Stalock beat, but his angle was off on the backhand shot, sending the puck back through the crease into the goal)...even when he got in trouble, he made it look good: he was knocked for a loop by the Bulldogs' Mason Raymond, drawing an interference penalty, and he scored a 9.5 (personally, I think the German judge was a bit rough on him). He was easily the most impressive player in the first period.
  • The Pioneer student section - the "Crimson Creatures" are a little weaker in numbers than I might have expected, given last year's playoff history, but they're certainly a humorous bunch! Dig that penalty kill chant, guys!
  • One more Pioneer who's impressed me tonight has been Chris Butler. He's maturing nicely into a top rearguard for this team and in the WCHA. He makes smart passes, controls the blueline well, and does an excellent job keeping the puck in.
  • Finally, I withdraw my previous comment about the Crimson Creatures. They've filled up the student section nicely, and I was quite impressed when I made my way down there to shoot some photos in the second. One gentleman in particular impressed with his bathrobe. He wears it to every single game, because the one game he didn't wear it to was one he was thrown out of. The things people do for college hockey...I love it!
  • With just over a minute left, Denver head coach George Gwozdecky made a lot of DU diehards happy when he gave senior goaltender and "Hobey Baker candidate" Danny King the first game action of his collegiate career. When the final buzzer sounded, the Pioneers skated off the bench and embraced King as if he'd been playing the entire game. Well, one thing's for certain: I definitely picked the right night to visit Magness Arena.
  • All in all, I liked what I saw from the Pioneers. Their power play executed well, they won 50-50 battles, and did all the things that good teams do to win hockey games. There are some dynamic talents on this roster, including Brock Trotter (note to NHL scouts, he's still draft eligible), Rhett Rakhshani (that was one hell of a slap shot), Ryan Dingle (the cold streak belies the skills) and Chris Butler (an extremely solid No. 1 defenseman).
CSTV Blogger To Visit Magness Arena Friday Night
Elliot Olshansky who writes the CSTV Rink Rat Blog will be visiting the DU & CC games this weekend. Elliott visits almost every college hockey arena in the country each season. This year he has already witnessed 43 college hockey games.

Elliot watched DU play Miami (Ohio) and Colgate earlier in the season but will be making his firsat visit out to Magness Arena. If you would like to talk to Elliot about anything college hockey related he will be at Spanky's from 5-6 PM on Friday night. Stop by his table and say "hi."

Afterwards he will be blogging live during the Pioneers game vs. Minnesota Duluth.

Here's a link to literally hundreds of photographs that cover his travels around the college hockey universe.

Royally Flushed? Not So Fast

From: CSTV Blog
by ELLIOT OLSHANSKY

(left) Elliot Olshansky is CSTV.com's hockey editor and runs his Rink Rat hockey blog on CSTV.com

For Denver coach George Gwozdecky, defenseman T.J. Fast's decision to leave school to join the Tri-City Americans of the major junior Western Hockey League is disappointing but not a long-term problem.

.

"Obviously, we have nine defensemen on our varsity roster," Gwozdecky said. "One of them has been playing as a forward now for a number of weeks, J.P. Testwuide, and with T.J. Fast leaving school, that moves us to a point where, all of a sudden, certain guys who have been in and out of the lineup are going to get a chance to be a little bit more regular, so I think that's a good thing for them."

.

However, for college hockey fans who remember seeing two of Fast's fellow Los Angeles Kings prospects--Michigan recruit Trevor Lewis and Yale sophomore-to-be David Meckler--leave college for the Ontario Hockey League after being drafted, the news of Fast's departure from the Pioneers midway through his sophomore year might be seen as a very big problem indeed.

.

While the decision of Boston College forward Brian Boyle to return for his senior year and the team's trade for the rights to Michigan defenseman Jack Johnson--who has been adamant about his desire to stay with the Wolverines--may have assuaged some fans' concerns about the Kings attitude toward the college game, the departure of another high draft pick for major junior could raise concerns once again about anti-college bias in Los Angeles.

.

However, the only bias on the part of Kings president and general manager Dean Lombardi is towards players getting all the facts and making their own decisions.

.

"The player still has to make the choice," Lombardi said. "Your obligation is to give him the pros and cons of each decision, and there are pros and cons to whichever avenue he pursues. Now, in the end, it's still going to be about the player's commitment, how good an athlete he is and how much he wants to be a pro. Whether he chooses college, junior, Europe, whatever: it's still going to come back down to the player. All avenues have demonstrated that a player who wants to be a pro can pursue each of these avenues and reach his goal. The most important thing is the relationship of trust that we have with our players; that at that stage of their careers, they're informed of the pros and cons and that whatever they do, we support them.

.

"Even if a player does not make his own decision, he has to feel, `OK, I'm going this route, here's the pros and cons. If he doesn't, and he's struggling, or there's a bump in the road, his inclination a lot of times, as a human being, is, `I knew I should have went there! Why'd you tell me to go that route?' I've seen that before, so that's why it's important that with college, junior, whatever, all we do is, `Here's the pros and cons, make your call, we'll support you and stick with it."

.

Lest anyone think that Lombardi is merely paying lip service, Gwozdecky can vouch for the Kings and their role--or lack thereof--in Fast's decision to go to Tri-City. In December, Gwozdecky was part of a conversation that also included Fast and Lombardi.

.

"Back in late November or early December," Gwozdecky said, "myself, T.J. and the Los Angeles Kings had conversations, and it was made very certain, with no doubt, that Dean Lombardi--who was on the phone with us--wanted T.J. to stay here at Denver, and in no uncertain terms, he felt that this is the place for T.J. to develop, and get his education, and develop a more mature attitude toward life, and at that point, T.J. said, I'm staying."

.

Lombardi, for his part, wanted to make sure that Fast made whatever decision he would eventually make for the right reasons.

.

"What happens is, if it's not working out, they tend to blame the coach or whatever," Lombardi said. "I told him, basically, to look his coach in the eye and say he had been the best he can be and done everything he was doing, to make sure he wasn't running away from a problem instead of trying to overcome it."

.

Two months later, Fast's opinion had changed, but Lombardi's had not.

.

"He called to say he wants to leave," Lombardi said. "Same question: Did you do everything possible? Look yourself in the eye and not blame anybody else. Now, it's your decision, but at least now, I think you can look yourself in the mirror, and if he did that, then he can."

.

Of course, Lombardi is more than savvy enough to know how Fast's departure might look in the light of previous moves by Kings draftees, and kept that in mind while dealing with Fast.

.

"That's why I had the coach on the phone," Lombardi said, "so there's no misunderstanding. George is great. The guy's developed a lot of pros. He understands."

.

Indeed, the Denver bench boss believes that anyone who tries to connect the dots between Lewis, Meckler and Fast will wind up with the wrong picture.

.

"I think without knowing the story, I think people would probably want to say, `Hey, they're all the same,'" Gwozdecky said, "but I think this issue is much different. I think this is an issue where this young guy is struggling for a number of reasons and he wasn't enjoying hockey very much. He's a `B' student, and he has a lot of good friends on the team, but I think, for him, he probably had some illusions that hockey at the college level would be easier. A year and a half into his career, the role he thought he might be able to play, he hadn't developed into that role yet. So, I think as a result, he wasn't having a lot of fun, and with the full support of his parents, he decided to throw all his eggs in one basket and leave school."

.

What will happen eventually with Fast and his "eggs" remains to be seen, but in the meantime, it's clear that it would be most unwise to "bet the farm" on any anti-college bias in the Kings organization.
CC's Coach Owens Faces Grilling Online
.

Colorado College head coach Scott Owens will join CSTV's At The Rink Chat at 1 p.m. MST on Tuesday. The Tigers prepare to meet rival Denver in the first half of the Gold Pan series this Friday and Saturday.

Scott Owens Chat:
Eaves Hires US Marshall To Spy On Opponents
I don't know about you, but there's something about Wisconsin coach Mike Eaves that has always bothered me. I hadn't been able to put my finger on it until I read this article, about hiring a former US Marshall to be his "Equipment Manager." Now it all makes sense.
.
I'm not supposed to be reporting this because the investigation is still ongoing, but DU allegedly found listening devices in the locker room last weekend at the Kohl Center.
.
The "bugs" were found during a routine sweep of the locker room and hotel. Before coming to Denver, DU Equipment Manager Lee Greseth, had spent time with Mossad, the Israeli Secret Service.

Checkmate Coach Eaves.
