“We’re fortunate to have such a great program, where we can recruit these great players that would be playing at any other school,” Cheverie said. “Your job is never safe, and that’s a good thing. It pushes everyone to be their best, and I think this team is going to be scary to play in the long run, with all our depth.”
The victory that snapped a three-game losing streak might serve the Pioneers the rest of the season, reminding them that Wiercioch could be the team’s only hard-to-replace part. [read rest of article]
DU 4 - Minnesota 0 FINAL
“We felt we had to make some changes, and those changes turned out to be very effective. The players we inserted into the lineup (Cunningham, Marcuzzi, Vossberg) really brought us some energy and enthusiasm, especially in the locker room. Obviously, Brandon Vossberg scored a big short-handed goal for us. They really were the glue, I thought, for our team tonight,” Gwozdecky said.

DU's Two Shorties Propel Them Past UAA 4-2

Rhett Rakhshani (Huntington Beach, Calif.) notched a power-play goal, while Chris Butler (St. Louis, Mo.) and Tyler Bozak (Regina, Saskatchewan) each added a short-handed tally in the second period to give DU a three-goal cushion. Senior netminder Peter Mannino (Farmington Hills, Mich.) stopped 24-of-26 shots to get the win.
The victory marked the seventh consecutive season DU has recorded at least 20 wins, while the Pioneers also improved to 13-3-1 at Magness Arena this year.
“I think everyone realized how big this game was for us,” Denver head coach George Gwozdecky said. “Our second period was huge, with the two short-handed goals and the power-play goal. We really needed that type of effort from our special teams.”
Each team scored on a point shot in the first period, with Kane Lafranchise striking for the Seawolves with a power-play goal at 10:15 and Patrick Mullen (Pittsburgh, Pa.) responding 48 seconds later with his fourth goal of the season. Mullen one-timed the rebound of a blocked Zach Blom (Englewood, Colo.) attempt and beat Seawolves netminder Jon Olthuis (30 saves) high to the glove side at 11:03.
Rakhshani gave DU a lead with his power-play goal from the left faceoff circle 1:04 into the second period before the Pioneers notched a pair of short-handed goals to take a 4-1 lead.
First, Butler deposited a feed from Kyle Ostrow (Calgary, Alberta) during a 2-on-1 break at 11:06, while Bozak then notched his fifth short-handed goal of the season off a feed from Jesse Martin (Edmonton, Alberta) on a nearly identical play at 18:40.
Luke Beaverson added a goal for UAA with 4:05 remaining to round out the scoring.
DU outshot UAA by a 34-26 margin and went 1-for-8 on the power play. The Seawolves finished 1-for-7 with the man-advantage.
Notes: DU ranks sixth in the latest PairWise Rankings...The Pioneers now rank first nationally with 10 short-handed goals...Bozak is tied for the national lead with five short-handed tallies...Stephen Cunningham (Boulder, Colo.) picked up his first collegiate point with an assist on Mullen’s first-period tally...DU has won all three match-ups against UAA this season...Mannino set a single-season career-high with his 19th victory of the year tonight...The netminder had 18 wins during his freshman campaign...DU has registered at least one power-play goal in 10 of its last 13 games...The Pioneers are 8-3 against unranked opponents this season.
Huge Recruiting Class Will Rebuild DU Hockey

by Nick Groke
University of Denver hockey coach George Gwozdecky today announced the signing of forward Anthony Maiani of Michigan to a national letter of intent, the newest in a series of signings that will give the Pioneers a new look next season.
The team also said seven other players will join the team as freshman in the fall.
That brings to 12 the number of new recruits to the Pioneers roster — an unusually high number after four players in the offseason left the team early to join the professional ranks.
It will be DU's largest recruiting class in Gwozdecky's 13 years with the team.
"With the early departure of several players to the pro ranks, we will once again rely heavily on our freshmen to produce," Gwozdecky said.
Maiani, a 5-foot-8, 165-pound forward, had 48 points with 16 goals and 32 assists in 59 games for Sioux City of the United States Hockey League last season. He led the team with a +20 plus-minus rating.
DU also added seven other freshman: defensemen Joey Brehm of Edina, Minn., Jon Cook of Denver, Chris Nutini of Centennial, and John Ryder of Colorado Springs; forwards Stephen Cunningham of Boulder, Dustin Jackson of Omaha; and goaltender Eddie Guinn of South Burlington, Vermont.
Maiani joins four other players who signed letters of intent: goaltender Marc Cheverie of Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia; forwards Tyler Bozak of Regina, Saskatchewan, and Jesse Martin of Edmonton and Kyle Ostrow of Calgary.

The 2006-07 USHL season is now in the books and the Sioux Falls Stampede have skated away with the 2007 Clark Cup title, and the Tier I national championship over the Waterloo Black Hawks. Waterloo featuring DU Defenseman to be John Lee, had a terrific season but fell short 3-0 in the Championship game.
Defenseman Jon Cook of Denver and two other Colorado natives have agreed to join the University of Denver hockey team as recruited freshman walk-ons next season.
Cook, brother of outgoing Pioneers senior forward Steven Cook, is a rookie in the Alberta Junior Hockey League, playing for the Camrose Kodiaks. The league champions are ranked No. 2 in the Canadian junior-A system, and Cook has played in 75 of the club's 77 regular-season and playoff games heading into the national tournament, which begins Friday.
Cook's sister, Dominique, is scheduled to marry former DU star Mark Rycroft, who just finished his first season with the Avalanche, in June. Dominique also attended DU.
"For me to be able to come back home and play is an absolute dream," Cook said from his Canadian billet home. "I'm so happy to have the opportunity, and whatever the team asks me to do that's what I'm doing."
Cook, who graduated from Colorado Academy, will become a DU classmate with defenseman Chris Nutini of Aurora and forward Steve Cunningham of Boulder.
Nutini, who attended Regis High School, plays for Wichita Falls of the North American Hockey League. Cunningham, from Fairview High School, plays for Burnaby of the British Columbia Hockey League.
Cook, 21, said he doesn't know Nutini and Cunningham, but given that Cook is older and didn't play hockey from the ages of 12 to 17, that's not surprising. Cook quit the game after pee-wees, then picked it up again as a high school junior after seeing his older brother develop at DU.
Steven Cook, who played four years of Colorado prep hockey at Kent Denver, overcame injuries and became a valuable fourth-line checking winger as a junior and senior at DU.
"I'd watch him and say, 'Man, that's a good time out there,"' Jon said of his 23-year-old brother. "That definitely had something to do with me coming back.
"I always think, 'Man, why did I ever quit. I would be so much further along.' But I really respect the game now. It's like a new-found love."
Incoming freshmen Jon Cook, Steve Cunningham, Dusty Jackson & Tyler Bozak will be 21 next season. Kyle Ostrow, Marc Cheverie and Chris Nutini will be 20 years old by opening day.
The older freshmen are expected to bring size, strength and instant maturity to DU's lineup. All of the 21 year-olds are over 6 feet tall and will weigh at least 180 lbs.

- Riley Nash - DU or Cornell (2007 or 2008) (Uncommitted)
Also hanging over DU's head like a huge matzah ball is Riley Nash who is trying to decide between DU & Cornell. His brother plays at Cornell, but he also likes DU. The odds may be slightly tilted in Cornell's favor, but its too close to call.
Forwards
2007 has the chance to be DU's deepest recruiting class since the mid to late Sixties when DU landed Magnuson, Koroll, Wiste, Powers, Morrison & Trembecky within a few seasons. Its to early to tell if there is another Stastny or Carle in the group, but certainly Denver has not had four (five if Nash comes) recruits the caliber of Ostrow, Bozak, Martin & Gregorie in one class. Three of the four are Top 5 forwards in the USHL & BCHL and Bozak was the leading scorer in the BCHL.
Cunningham & Jackson will provide some much needed depth and may find a role of the team if they bring an expected physical presence.
Defensemen
The question at DU right now is, "Who's coming in to play defense?" TJ Fast left in mid-season and Adrian Veideman graduated and yet, DU has no defensive recruits at this time. John Lee, brother of Brian is waiting in the wings, but he's may not be ready for the WCHA. He spent most of last season at Moorhead High School where he was a Mr. Minnesota Hockey finalist.
Goaltending
Marc Cheverie has had an up and down season in goal in the BCHL, but he is already drafted by the NHL. He chose DU over UND and has an incredible upside potential since he's 6'3".
If DU gets Nash and Gregorie comes in 2007, I'd take DU's class over Wisconsin's. If neither come, DU's recruiting class is probably third or fourth behind Wisconsin, Minnesota & UND.

The Burnaby Express forward has accepted a scholarship to attend the University of Denver in the fall of 2007 where he will join former Express teammate Keith Seabrook. Cunningham is finishing his second full season with the Express.
.
Cunningham joined the Express in the 2005-06 season from the Bozeman Ice Dogs and played a key role in Burnaby's Fred Page Cup, Doyle Cup, and RBC Cup Championships in 2006. He finished the regular season with 19 points but is having a terrific post-season with 9 points through 9 games played.
