Daniel Doremus Commits To DU
(above) Dan Doremus is from Aspen, ColoradoHeisenberg's Recruiting Website is reporting that Daniel Doremus (6'1 180 lbs) from Steamboat Springs and Aspen, will attend the University of Denver in either 2011 or 2012. He is currently playing for the Colorado Thunderbirds where he has 23 goals and 20 assists in 39 games, while attending high school in Denver.
Before playing for the Thunderbirds, he played youth hockey for the Aspen Leafs. His older brother Tyler is a Sophomore hockey player at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY and is having a nice season with 10 goals & 4 assists in 25 games.
Next season Doremus has several opportunities to play in various junior leagues around North America. The NAHL Wenatchee Wild have "tendered" or offered him contract, announcing his intentions to play for them. Once a player signs a tender with a team, his NAHL playing rights belong to that team.
He is also expected to be drafted in the USHL Draft on May 19, 2010 and reportedly there are teams in the BCHL and AJHL up in Canada that are hot on his heels as well.
Gwozdecky and Miller mined gold in the Rockies in recent years with J.P. Testwuide and Ryan Dingle, so DU's unlikely but very successful recruiting pipeline in the heart of Colorado ski country remains open.
Doremus' coaches on the Thunderbirds this season are a couple former Pioneer players, Shawn Kurulak and Angelo Ricci.

The Innovation in Mass Communications class produced a video “The Class,” which parodies the TV series “The Office” and has received more than 27,000 views on YouTube in the month it has been posted.

Student Ticket & White-Out 2.0 Updates
(above) White-Out 2.0 kicks off on Friday NightLess than 100 student tickets remain for the game against Colorado College on Friday night. The game has been "Sold Out" to the general public for well over a week. Needless to say "57 Fever" is sweeping the campus.
White "7th Man" T-shirts will be given to the first 500 students who enter Magness Arena on Friday night. There will also be 75 "mini-tigers" given away to students.
Once again the DU Grilling Society will be hosting a pre-game BBQ and fundraiser with ZBT to help the Children's Miracle Network. DUGS will be serving Tiger Shrimp & Chicken before the game.

A student bus heading down to Colorado Springs for the Saturday night game sold out in less than three hours last week. Tickets for the game in World Arena are still available. Lets turn World Arena into a home game for DU and pack the dump. Students will be pre-gaming at Chili's less than one mile north of World Arena.-----------

(above) The MacNaughton Cup was escorted by police out of North DakotaWCHA commissioner Bruce McLeod said the MacNaughton Cup arrived safely at his Denver-based office Monday from North Dakota under heavy security and will be presented to the Pioneers before or after Friday's game at Magness Arena.

DU Skier Finishes 28th At Olympic Games

DU alpine skier Leif Kristian Haugen competed for the Norwegian ski team in the 2010 Winter Olympics and finished 28th in the giant slalom. His next trip to the slopes will be for the NCAA championships.
“Of course, right after the giant slalom, I was disappointed; I hoped to do better,” Haugen says. “Overall, I did some sections of the course really well. Making it to the Olympics is a great experience for me. I definitely feel like I learned something. Maybe when we get to Sochi, [site of the 2014 games in the Black Sea resort area of Russia] I’ll be better prepared and fight for the medals.”
Haugen did not finish his first run in the slalom event after straddling a gate, which effectively ended his Olympic competition.
“It happens, it’s a part of the sport,” Haugen says. “It sucks when it happens — it maybe happens once or twice a season.”
Haugen says some of the highlights of his Olympic experience were living in the athletes’ village for a few days before the skiing events began, dining with Norway’s King Harald V and Queen Sonja and sharing a house with fellow Norwegian ski team members.
“I stayed in a house with Aksel Lund Svindal — he won a gold, a silver and a bronze — and Kjetil Jansrud. He won a silver,” Haugen says. “So at least I got to hold a medal.”
Haugen’s experience also crystallized his desire to someday win a medal for Norway.
“I’m fired up right now, I’m looking forward to finding out how I can get a lot better,” Haugen says. “The planning is already there.”
Haugen is expected to return to campus and compete for DU in the NCAA championships March 10–13 in Steamboat Springs, Colo.
Alumnus Tom Zakrajsek (BA English and mass communications ’88) coached U.S. women’s champion Rachael Flatt to a 7th place finish in ladies figure skating.

(left) DU won the WCHA's MacNaughton Cup for the 13th time on Saturdau night against Minnesota StatePaul Statsny and his USA teammates won Silver Medals on Sunday despite losing a heartbreaking 3-2 overtime loss to Canada. Stastny scored a goal and had two assists in Team USA's six games, but was minus-one in his nearly 18 minutes of ice time Sunday. His whole family, including his father Peter, attended the game. This wasn't his dad's first Olympics, just first as a dad. He played for Czechoslovakia in 1980 when the U.S. beat Russia for gold and again in 1994 for his native Slovakia.
DU recruit Jason Zucker scored six goals for the USNDT in three USHL games last week. Zucker scored a power-play goal with 43 seconds left in the opening period against Sioux City yesterday afternoon, recorded a hat trick against Lincoln and tallied two goals in Friday night's 6-2 win over Des Moines. He'll play for the University of Denver next season.
The Atlanta Thrashers have reassigned former DU goaltender Peter Mannino to the Chicago Wolves. Mannino, who did not appear in any games during his recall, is currently in the midst of a professional career-high 10-game winning streak. Atlanta needed a goalie to help out in practice as the team returned to the rink after its Olympic vacation. The team was down to one netminder with goaltender Ondrej Pavelec in Vancouver representing the Czech Republic team. Mannino, 26, was rewarded with an opportunity to practice with the parent club for a few days.
DU recruit Beau Bennett is off to a fast start in the BCHL playoffs. He has a goal and two assists in the teams first two playoff games.
